last year before buying my second macbook ever i hesitated, i really thought that i don't need a laptop with its heavy size, but there is no point in getting a limited power net book either.
i really wanted a portable device that can do 2 major things,
1-use the internet without any limitation,
2-some form of word processing, my ideal solution would be to replace the paper in my bag ,
after seeing the IPad i am still hoping that apple will improve this device
it has potentials

if i can hand write (with a stylus- not stupid finger tips), take my notes while in lecture in an easy manner, write directly on any file format including ebooks and pdf, the device is tough enough to handle some slapping around and putting my elbow on it while i take notes,
add this to the current features and i will be welling to pay as much as pay for a macbook.
i dont need no camera , no GPS, even multi-tasking will be a non-issu
if this can be done then all i have to travel with is my trio : iphone,ipad,macbook..
can this dream come true ?? if that happens i think mac will take over campuses all over the country

There already styli available that will work on the iPad. The Pogo stylus is probably the best.

If you want to take notes by stylus, you could just write your notes on a graphic program. If you want the device to translate your handwriting into text (like on the Newton), you can bet that there'll be apps that will let you do that.

It would be nice if the iPad had that as a text input method available for all apps though. Perhaps as an alternative to the keyboard, which you could activate through the Preferences menu. Apple has good handwriting translation software, which is uses on Macs, so it could theoretically add it to the iPad. Jobs seems to be fundamentally opposed to the use of styli though, so I wouldn't count on that happening.

You may want to look into getting an iPad with the keyboard dock, or the apple bluetooth keyboard. here http://www.apple.com/ipad/design/

if you scroll to the bottom of that link you can see the keyboard dock or just the regular dock. you can get the apple bluetooth keyboard here: http://www.apple.com/keyboard/

instead of writing you can use a keyboard and then taking notes will be a breeze. hope this helps :)

hand writing to text is nice but not important, but again it would be really nice to have
stylus is unbeatable for note taking , because its not just about text, its also lines and figures and chemical formulas
99% of profs now have the lecture slide available before hand (PDF) we all we need is print them with the setting we prefer, then write our notes on them
this also could work when reading books, instead of underlining or highlighting on the book we can buy ebooks and take notes on them
