I have 2 old Apple TV and bought 2 of the newer ones to put an Apple TV on each room with a TV at my house. I really love the size, the speed, Netflix and the Home Sharing feature which is amazing! For what I'm not happy at all is the poor job at the local library specially on the TV Show area. On the original Apple TV I have my TV shows organized by TV Shows and then I can see another folder for each season of the TV Show. On the new ATV its a disorganized list showing all the TV show seasons in a big list and its not even in sequential order. This is not the Apple way of doing things and I personally cannot understand how they left something like that pass to the final product. I hope that Apple fixes this for the lot of loyal Apple TV users who have build their media library for the Apple TV. I also miss the album artwork as a screensaver... Please Apple fix this asap I'm not asking for something new just to put something back on the software.

Edit: I put the same post on the Apple Support forums and they delete it!

I just posted a remark about this in another thread: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1026921/

My :apple:TV2 does list by show, then season, then in episode order, like this:
Code:
Roswell
   Season 1
      Episodes
   Season 2
      Episodes
   Season 3
      Episodes

In iTunes, I have the season number (say 3), episode number (say 302 for season 3, episode 2), and date.

I have the same problem as the original poster. Interesting to hear that you don't get this issue. Must be a difference in how they are tagged? Would love to solve this one as I agree, it is very annoying to have a long list of shows by season. I setup my home movies as a tv show and each year is a season, i now have several rows where it used to show as one.

Today or this weekend, I can open the files in MetaX or use AtomicParsley to see exactly what tags I have, and how they are set.

I can also check more shows, but the few I have watched behave the same way.

If you can, post a picture of what your TV show screen looks like. I have my TV shows fully tagged, and they are still being separated by the seasons, instead of showing as one show then the episodes next.

I think I read that you need to tag the files using the disk and track numbers (as in music tracks) as opposed to season and episode.

I am sure they are working on this. The interface is so familiar to us old AppleTV folks that we may not appreciate that this is a whole new system and we may not understand what seems like steps backwards.

I used to group some movies together in the movie menu by giving them the same show title. It works fine in old appletv but is lost in new appletv.

I bet an update is released within 30 days. Until then the new appletv is on probation in the boy's room.

I have all of my TV shows tagged like music tracks and on the episode/season tags and it still won't separate into seasons on my original :apple:TV. Say I have multiple seasons of one show, on the track and disc number do I need to say disc 1 of (however many seasons I have) or just disc 1 of 1 for that particular season. I'm still trying to fix mine so it works like you explained it. Right now I have tagged as such.

"Track #" of "# of episodes in that season"
"Disc #" of "# of seasons I have in library"

**EDIT**
Ok, so neither my previous way or this way of tagging work:
"Track #" of "# of episodes in that season"
"Disc 1" of "1" (I did this for each season both values 1 for all seasons)

I seem to remember similar issues with tv shows being out of order when the original apple tv first came out, it was fixed in an early update.

Not from personal experience but from what I read, season 1 was disk 1 of 2, season 2 was 2 of 2, season 3 was 3 of three, season 4 was 4 of 4. YMMV

I'm just gonna wait till they fix it, which they will...

I keep seeing everyone say they were able to do this on the old apple TV. Well that's exactly what I'm trying to do on my old appleTV and so far I have not been able to achieve this.

Can anyone point me to a thread that shows how to tag TV shows correctly to get them sorted like this on the original :apple:TV? My searches have brought up nothing that works for me. Even the apple support forums lead nowhere for me.

I use iFlicks, which does a decent job of marking them up right for my ATV Classic. Not a dislike of the others, mind you... Just what I use.

It's kind of misleading, but the settings you need are "Flatten to QuickTime Movie", which will just tag and copy anything that's already in a format that ATV can use.

It works

Not sure what the trouble is for everyone else, but all I had to do was assign a season to each show and they show up in the proper season (by show) view in the ATV. If you also identify the episode it will be organized better within the season. Simple.

I'm just goin gto be patient on this. Seems like an obvious fix for the next iOS update. Btw, how does the apple tv update it's iOS? Does that happen automatically through itunes?

It will be able to do on it's own. Actually I don't think it uses iTunes at all. It's all done on the device itself. I don't know if it alerts you, but you can go and check for updates in the settings area. I can't remember, it's been so long since my last update and I'll never get another one :( at least not until I get the new appleTV :D
