I would love to see an official iChat made specifically for the iPhone. I just love how "official apple apps" feel so right on the iPhone. I would die to have this!

Good idea! That would be way better then the AIM app. I guess the texting app is similar to iChat.

I'm guessing that Apple is prevented from doing this by ATT. An official iChat app would take money from ATT's SMS.

I agree. However, the AIM app works well enough to get the job done. I personally thought MobileChat (Was in the installer) was the best, since it had iChat bubbles...

camera

wouldn't the iphone need to be video(recordable) ready for ichat to be the same as we know it? does that make sense? i haven't used ichat before.

EDIT: To the guy above the guy above ^^ :).
First. nobody was talking about the videoconferencing function. Second the camera can function as a video recorder. 3rd it would be very difficult to videochat with somebody when the screen is on the front and the camera is on the back.

For the rest of the thread...
I have a pretty good feeling that the reason that apple hasn't and won't make iChat for the iphone is because it means that they don't want to deal with maintaining it and all of the different complaints people have. Look at how ruthless people are on the appstore reviews. Apple doesn't want to deal with that... nor should they have to. They don't need to go out of their way to make a product that is going to compete with the 1948093942304 other mobile chat clients that will be developed for the iPhone...

How so? They have a whole 2 apps available. Remote, which many people have had issues with, and it's a pretty simple app to start with, and poker.

If Apple couldn't get their own apps running correctly on their own device, what hope has the other developers?

Funny, I count 19 as of the 2.0 upgrade. Maybe you missed some of the more obscure ones, like Phone, iPod, Calendar, Mail. :D

Could the OP have been talking about all apps, not just from the App Store?

Seriously, though, what's the problem with Remote? Works for me exactly as advertised, did the very first time. I would venture that most folks with problems are missing something in their particular setup and blaming Apple for it (as is usually the case with those sort of things). As far as Texas Hold'em, I can't speak to as I don't have it, and would likely not get it in the first place.

I had no problems with remote or texas hold em whatsoever. They both worked extremely well for me. So not sure what you're talking about.

Anyways, one can only wish for an official iChat app for the iPhone. I hope it comes true one day.

NO iChat!!!

NOOOOOOOOOO DONT BE STUPID.
If they put iChat on the iPhone that means they are going to come out with a new phone (Forward facing Video Camera). I've Bought 3 iphones so far I don't want to buy a 4th.

YOU CANT AFFORD THAT SO PLEASE STOP!!!

Then don't no one is making you buy these phones.

Bring on iChat.

I'm more waiting on a really good free/cheap IM app that combines all the protocols. Essentially what I want is a good Palringo, not just iChat. iChat is good, but not exactly what I want since I have friends on Yahoo and MSN too.

Aim and Palringo are fine. Adium app would own though.

Ummm...have you ever used Palringo? For the only multi-protocol IM app on the iPhone, it's pretty weak. They could have done such a better job so easily. I was honestly disappointed with them

I think you missed my point. What makes the Apple apps so much better than all the other great apps on the app store? What makes them "feel so right" as compared to others? I never said I has any issues with any apple app. I just don't see where they are head and shoulders above other apps that are available.
