so, if i use isquint to produce a atv suitable mp4 file, can i drop it straight onto the apple tv and watch it from there or do i have to enter it in itunes and play it from there?

Any file you own must be in iTunes. Then there are 2 ways apple tv works

1 sync

You use iTunes to copy over to atv (sync) where it sits on atv's hard drive and the computer can be turned off. You can then watch it anytime with no iTunes or computer ever.

2 stream
You turn on atv while iTunes is running on the computer in the other room and you see it in atv and stream it. This takes up zero space on your apple tv.
