It's probably a good way of finding out who is using the iPhone and thus providing secure updates to it.

It's not hard to set up an iTS account, you can do it without entering a CC.

Wouldn't the updates be through Safari or the OS system and just automatically be downloaded?

So you do have to have it to set up the iPhone period?

It all just seems weird to me because to buy any other phone you don't have to setup an account through their company (or a side application that they own that collects info on you). I know there is almost always a survey or registration sometimes that's optional for the costumer to do for the most part, but like I said its optional.

I wonder if you have to have a US iTMS account, therefore bringing it over to the UK (even if you can get it unlocked) won't work anyway?

This page, http://www.apple.com/iphone/easysetup/getready.html says this:

"To set up your iPhone, you’ll need an account with Apple’s iTunes Store. If you already have an iTunes account, make sure you know your account name and password. If you don’t have an account, you should set one up now to save time later. To set up an account, launch iTunes, select the iTunes Store, and click the Sign In button in the upper right corner of iTunes. Sign in and you’re ready to go."

Does this mean just to use the iTunes on the iPhone or in order to set up the phone period?

I'm guessing everyone interested in buying an iPhone has an iTunes account, but with the newly found personal information being stored with each song downloaded, is this really necessary if it is just to set up the iPhone? Yeah just go ahead and call me a paranoid freak that doesn't want companies collecting information on me without my knowledge;)

Newly found ?? Your email address has been inside the file for ages now. Did you honestly think they would release DRM-free tracks without tracking information in them ??

Thats just being over paranoid.

Yeah newly found because this all just developed since June 1. I'm slow in posting I know. My e-mail address isn't what bothers me. It's that combined with my name and account information. That's what bother's me. Especially that Apple has my credit card information and home address etc..
And now they want all that stuff for the iPhone as well, just to activate it. My whole point is why do they NEED it? I can buy a CD or any other phone and no one gets all that information.
