Ok, so about 2 days after a hack was designed to allow custom ringtones onto the iphone, people developed nice and easy tools for those of us who are not totally into using terminal etc. As someone who used Terminal for the first time to put ringtones on my Iphone, I would prefer to not use it again. The directions online to tether the Iphone seem incredibly daunting. This hack has been around for well over a week, maybe two, and yet nobody has designed a "simple program" to do this, when it only took 2 days for the ringtones. Why is this? I'm not complaining, rather hoping that someone with more knowledge than myself can help us who rely on tethering!! Thank you

Can't imagine why you would want to tether an EDGE phone anyways. The connection is dead slow. Acceptable for a phone, tedious at best tethered to a laptop.

Well, thank you for your opinion, even though it wasn't asked for.

And now thatt that's out of the way, I would also like to put out the call for someone to find a way to develop easy tethering. And if they can do it via Bluetooth as opposed to a kludgy ad hoc WiFi connection, that would be even more awesome. An app I'd even pay money for, whether AT&T/Apple develop it, or someone else hacks it in.

As for EDGE being slow: one, it's about three times faster than dialup. Two, about 85% of the network is still on EDGE. Three, EDGE web surfing on a laptop is going to be just as fast as sufring on the Iphone, considering the same browser is being used. And Four, although YOU may find it slow, I have been in a number of situations where there was no WiFi or ethernet, but there was EDGE. And I will take EDGE over the alternative (dialup) in such situations anyday.

Let's just say that most people won't spend a lot of time developing tethering with the iphone which is why there is nothing available for you. Not everyone is as enthused as you are about the speed when it comes to laptop browsing. What is OK for a phone (EDGE) is unacceptable for most people on a laptop. Different devices, different expectations. I love my iphone screen but I wouldn't hang it on the wall and have friends over to watch movies in my home theater.

I too would love an easy tether tool. Mainly as a backup when my provider goes down. Within Safari you can turn off images increasing greatly browsing speed. My work just involves lots of text data so an edge connection is more than enough.

Why is it that every time anyone has anything to say about the data connection on the iPhone we get the obligatory "EDGE sucks" joker response? A) I think we all get that EDGE is (supposedly) slower than 3G and B) I think we're sick of hearing it from the peanut gallery and C) it's not at all helpful or productive to snipe (grow up). Eye.Surgeon, I apologize for appearing to pick on you personally. I'm not. But you just happen to be the straw that broke the camel's back.

When I moved to the iPhone, I also switched my wife to AT&T and a Blackjack. And we just spent the last 2 weeks driving up & down the east coast on a family vacation. So let's just say that I have ready access to AT&T devices with EDGE and 3G and a lot of side-by-side comparison time (tethered and stand-alone).

I'll start off by saying this: if an iPhone existed with 3G would l I want it? Only if it also had EDGE. I have found 3G to be very spotty in its availability - like to the point of being a big surprise when it actually becomes available on the Blackjack. So before you go beat up Apple for not including it, you might want to first beat up AT&T to actually deploy it so it could be used. More important, I just don't see a big speed increase. Really. OK, if I was going to download a huge data file or stream hi-res video, maybe I might see a difference but we are talking about handheld devices with small screens meant to be mobile devices (not laptops).

So let me take the next logical leap... presto! we now have 3G. "OH MY GOD! CAN YOU BELIEVE APPLE INCLUDED SUCH A SMALL SCREEN ON THIS P.O.S. DEVICE?! WHAT A BUNCH OF IDIOTS!" or "ARE YOU KIDDING ME? WE GET 3G AND A GREAT SCREEN AND WE CAN ONLY STORE 4 OR 8 GB OF DATA ON THIS DEVICE? WHAT THE HELL WAS STEVE JOBS THINKING?"

The current iPhone is what it is. If there is a villain in the 3G moral outrage, then it's AT&T because their 3G network isn't out there for the majority of us. But there is no villain. The iPhone has been out for many weeks and for months before we all knew what it was and wasn't. I just think the iMoaners need to stop the silly sniping any time anyone asks about a data-related feature.

Back to the topic at hand, I too would love to see an easy tether app created so I could use my iPhone as a modem. Right now, I have to use my wife's Blackjack (oh, there's that EDGE vs. 3G real-world comparison thing again - after 2 weeks on the road, I can report that EDGE works just fine for tethering and it's a hell of a lot better than the alternative of no connection at all). But while I'm waiting for it, I'm going to go vent my moral outrage at Dell for not including 3G in my Latitude laptop. CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT?

I just think about it like this...It's probably faster to tether over EDGE then it is to drive all the way back to your house and use the computer.

Apparently the people who put the pretty GUIs around the ugly shell scripts aren't interested in tethering.

Funny, it's already been developed. This thread is about asking for something easier.

You seem to be the only one on this thread who, for whatever reason, actively detests tethering. No one said YOU had to use it if it became available. Quite a few of us on the other hand, would very much like it.

Not everyone is as enthused as you are about the speed when it comes to laptop browsing.

I didn't say I was enthused about the speed. I DID say there are a number of situations where WiFi isn't available, and where EDGE is better than nothing.

What is OK for a phone (EDGE) is unacceptable for most people on a laptop.

Then why do you even own an iPhone?

If what you say was TRULY the case, then why aren't you complaining that Safari is on the iPhone? Safari is a Big Boy browser for Big Boy computers, not for little phones, right?! :D

Safari pulls exactly the same content that a laptop browser would. Yet you seem perfectly fine with letting EDGE do the heavy lifting on your phone. What makes it suddenly unacceptable to pull the exact same content on a laptop over EDGE? The larger screen doesn't make it load longer.

Different devices, different expectations. I love my iphone screen but I wouldn't hang it on the wall and have friends over to watch movies in my home theater.

Nor would I want to show a bunch of my friends Awesome Web Stuff on it. I'd want my laptop for that... if there's no broadband, guess what I want to use? :)

At any rate, let's get back to the topic at hand before this thread was so rudely hijacked. I, and several others want easier tethering. Bluetooth-based DUN or even PAN would be a nice improvement, IMO. Anyone know if someone has it in the works?

I agree, would love to have this as a backup option if needed!
