Please explain how iPhone text messages to be read on iMac, Macbook or Mac Pro?

So, I have iPhone 6 running iOS 8

I have the iMac running Yosemite 10

Handoff is enabled in settings.

When I get a text message on my iPhone. Will that automatically be pushed to my Mac desktop or do I need an app open to see it (such as iMessenger)?

To date, have not seen any text messages from iOS 8 pushed to Yosemite
