Please explain the difference between these CPUs...

Based on those reviews, I avoid ALLHDD like the plague. If it seems to good to be true.....

I always use Newegg as my base price. If the "deal" is more than a third less than Newegg, then there is probably something fishy going on.

These processors have always had a recommended customer price of $1,663. Even large retailers like Newegg and TigerDirect will pay close to that in order to acquire them due to low volume of this part. These large retailers can afford to hold on to outdated inventory rather than take a loss. Smaller retailers are more likely to want to clear out inventory and so you can find plenty of sub $1,000 prices on these 3 year old CPUs.

Howard - Did you buy 2 x5680 to put into your 4,1 or 5,1 MacPro? That link has a great price...I was hoping that maybe the x5690 would be cheap as well, but it's not.

Any web address that starts with "m.whatever" is a mobile version. Some web browsers have a hard time with some sites for mobile. Replace the "m" with "www" and it will open.

Yeah ... I just bought a pair of X5680 last week and installed them in a new 2012 5,1 Mac Pro to replace the 2.4GHz CPUs. One of the regular posters recommended that site recently. I ordered mid-week and received them Friday, but had to wait for the hex wrench delivered Saturday, then did the install on Sunday. If you have a 4,1 there are some posts here on how to deal with the lidless replacement to avoid damage to the socket.

These claim to be new and bulk packaged, not the retail boxed ones you see for $1600. I expected them to be packaged on individual trays, but they were wrapped in conductive foam, then put in a antistatic bag, then in an antistatic box with ESD stickers. They looked fine, and are working great.

I too wanted X5690s ... until I saw the price!

Also, bear in mind, I have not attempted an upgrade this complicated. I currently have a 5,1 MacPro (single 5,1 3.33 GHz w3680) and found a cheap 4,1 dual CPU model on ebay that I want to turn into a transcoding monster. I've installed RAM and hard drives into both laptops and my Mac Pro and I swap out cards in my mac pro all the time...but replacing a processor is something new.

How difficult was the process?

Yeah ... that looks like the post I read, especially the first page with all the pictures and step-by-step walkthrough. The pictures look just like mine, other than I have 2 heatsinks. I used the mentioned Arctic Silver kit of cleaner, prep, and thermal paste, and it worked well. It was quite easy, although I do have a lot of experience with computer parts and have done similar things many times before. Still, if you go slow and follow those directions, it is pretty easy ... just makes you a bit nervous due to the cost of the parts.

I did get a scare when I put it back together, turned it on, and it sounded like a jet about to take off. I saw that both processors were working, temps were OK, but one BOOST fan showed 0 rpm. Took a closer look and one of the heatsink fan connectors wasn't inserted all the way. I just stuck some tweezers through the heatsink fins and pushed it fully down. Now everything worked fine. I put some null loops in terminal which forced all 12 cores to 100%, then sat back and watched the temps and fan speeds. Temps topped out at about 65 deg C, and fans went up to 1500 rpm while program was running. Stopping the program allowed the CPU temp and fans to return back to normal.

I am glad I went ahead and upgraded this one ... I will be able to use this Mac Pro for the next several years!
