Dear Forum Users / Mods,

Long time reader, first time poster...

I have an iMac, a MacBook Pro, and an iPhone. Mrs Tockus has an iPad 2 and an iPhone.

We are both MobileMe subscribers so that we could use shared calendars. We both have @me.com email addresses. We both use the same Apple ID for iTunes / App Store which was set up before we had our MobileMe subscriptions and uses a Hotmail email address.

With the transition to iCloud. Can anybody please tell me how we can maintain our shared calendars, but use the same Apple ID for our iTunes / App Store account so we are not paying twice for music, apps, audiobooks, etc.? Or am I asking for the impossible?

Many thanks in advance,

Tockus.

Once you setup your iPhone with your iCloud (MobileMe) Apple ID, you can go into the Settings and change your iTunes Store account to something different.

In other words, your iCloud ID doesn't have to match the iTunes Store ID on your phone. Does that make sense? And does it answer your question?

You will have to keep using both hotmail email addresses for itunes/apps store there is no way to merge them. So really you now have 2 Me accounts and 2 separate iTunes/Apps accounts there is no way to merge them.

EricNau,

Thank you for this very helpful reply... When I get home this evening, I will get all of my devices updated, follow your instructions and hopefully all will be well! Thanks for your help, I will be sure to let you know how I get on!

We're in a similar situation, but both have Me accounts already (mine is the one we use for iTunes). Will we be able to share a calendar, but not contacts?

I don't believe so, you only get to enter one Apple ID for iCloud, though there might be some creative solutions (like creating different Contact Groups in Address book, e.g.).

Just one other thing... iMessage on the iPad... That is using the Hotmail email address so when Mrs T sends a message to my iPhone from her iPad, it does not alert me to a new message, as it believe's it's being sent from the same account?!

My head hurts now!

iMessage is well... less than stellar in my opinion.

It would seem that you have to ensure iMessage is configured with the same Apple ID(s) on all devices AND the same Apple ID selected in the "caller ID" field.

Problem is, this ensures that SMS messages will be kept in a separate conversation on your phone (distinct from the iMessages conversations). For example, if Bob sends you an iMessage from his iPad, it is impossible for that message to be displayed in the same conversation as a SMS message from Bob's iPhone (he didn't have a data connection at the time).

Frankly, if this is Apple's approach, then they should have just kept iMessage separate from the SMS app. But that's just my opinion. In the meantime, I'm keeping iMessage disabled on my iPhone.

It looks like you can add multiple iCloud accounts under Mail, Contacts, Calendar. I only have one iCloud account, so i haven't actually added another account. I do have a separate Me.com account that has yet to be converted to iCloud, and I've added that to my iPad in addition to my iCloud account. Then I can pick and choose what to sync from each account. I'm still experimenting, but it looks like it could be quite flexible, once you get it sorted out.
