Ok, so I'll do my best to explain it (by the way, if you think you can help, I'm fine having you call my toll free number instead of emailing 800-636-0457)

So my G5 running OS10.6, has 3 internal drives in it. At some point the other day, I was having a few issues, and after using Disk Utilities and restarting, all 3 drives got locked?

I have all my back-ups on these drive, and REALLY need to get my access back.

I have tried "Get Info" and change permissions but it won't come off of "Custom".

I tried this but it doesn't work, and or I'm typing in something wrong?

_________
  1. Press cmd + Space to bring up a search.
  2. Type Terminal and press Enter.
  3. In Terminal, type in the following (depending on your drive name) and press Enter:
    “sudo chflags nouchg /Volumes/Drive_Name”
If your drive name has a space in it then you will need to type a space as “\ “
    For example: “/Volumes/Drive\ Name”.
  4. You will need to enter your password and press Enter.
    • It won’t show any characters when you type.
    • If you do not have a password then set one first.
  5. Now type in the following and press Enter:
    sudo chmod 1775 /Volumes/Drive_Name
  6. The lock should now be removed. Do this for every drive that appears as locked.
  7. Find your home folder and right click it, then select Get Info.
  8. Look under the Sharing & Permissions section. If the padlock is locked then click it, enter your password if you have one and click OK.
  9. Click the + button, click on your username and click Select.
  10. Click on your name in the list.
  11. Click the cog like icon, then click Make (Me) the owner.
  12. Click the cog like icon, then click “Apply to enclosed items”.
  13. You will be asked “Are you sure…”. Click OK to confirm.
  14. Once done, click the padlock to lock the changes.

I just reinstalled the OS in hopes that that would work, but still nothing. I've run Repair Disk from Disk Utilities, no luck. Repair Disk Permissions is grayed out, so I can't select that in hopes that it would work. I can Repair Permissions on the Drive that had the OS on it, but I don't want to screw that drive up, cause then I'll be up shitz creek.

Could you explain what you mean by "locked"?

Does this mean:
- you can't access them AT ALL
- you can read but can't write

What does it mean?

How about if you try this:
a. click on the drive icon to select it
b. bring up get info box
c. click the lock at the bottom and enter your administrative password
d. put a check into the box "ignore ownership on this volume"
e. close get info.

Can you now access files on that drive?
(you'll note that this is different than what you described above)

I can't see anything on them. I can't select the drive(s), and "Get Info", and do this, as it is all grayed out. All options are saying "Custom". The Ignore ownership is also grayed out.

I can't open, see or copy anything to these drives.

I ran Disk utilities the other day and after restating this is what happened (that being, that all internal drive except the one of the OS on it, are now locked)

Could you take (at least) one of the drives OUT of the g5, and try to access it on another Mac?

OK, for starters, you don't have a G5 computer, you have a standard Mac Pro 1,1, so best to drop the G5 from further conversation so as to minimize confusion. Here's my question: were these three drives in some form of raid configuration, perhaps administered by Disk Utility? I'm thinking that your symptoms are consistent with having buggered up the RAID, and now the data is still there but the operating system doesn't know how to talk to it (RAID system parameters gone)?

how old are the drives?

is it raid?

sounds like the drives may have gone bad, do you know what happened before?
power cut or surge?
old drives?
did you do something?
what did you do in Disk Utilities?

do you have a second computer to test on?
