Please help me confirm Step by Step SSD Upgrade of 14,1 Imac 21.5 (Late 2013)

I am a windows user who has previously upgraded my SSD but now am working on an unfamiliar iMac that belongs to my wife so want to get my ducks in a row….

I already have the IFIXIT Tool Repair Kit.


My plan is as follows:

Clone HD to SSD using Samsung Data Migration and the above the external enclosure.

Then use the following instructions for opening Imac.

Concern: Read TRIM can be an issue but unclear if I have to change any setttings and how to do it.

Concern: Read Fan running continuously is an issue because heat sensor or ???


Question: Do I need a bracket or spacer to hold the SSD in place?



Is there anything else that I am missing?

TRIM is not really an issue. You can choose to enable trim, or not.
You can enable trim easily with the trimforce command in the terminal:

sudo trimforce enable

You don't have to do anything with a temp sensor on a 2013 iMac. It's no longer a problem.

No spacer should be needed. You just transfer the soft-shell bracket that holds the hard drive to the SSD.

The only thing that you didn't mention is that you should take your time during the disassembly - don't try to rush when you open the case and remove the display assembly. There are some connectors that are quite easy to damage. You shouldn't have any problem if you take your time. The iFixit guides are good. Follow each step carefully.

You could sure save yourself A LOT of hassle by doing this (instead of opening the iMac):
- Get a USB3 enclosure, or USB3/SATA dock or dongle
- Connect the SSD via USB3
- Set it up with your OS, apps, and accounts, and make it an "external booter".

You'll see 85% of the speed (that you would see if the drive was installed internally), with NONE of the risks of the installation job.
