I obviously have 2.0 out of the box, but i want to restore my iphone 3G and have the latest build of 2.0 go on it, rather than the factory one. if i click restore in itunes, and restore has been done, can i select "restore from previous backup" or will this just put the factory version of 2.0 back on? i'm a little confused

The 2.0 version on your phone is the same as if you restore and download the new one from iTunes, if you select restore from backup they your settings from before the restore will be kept, the new software will remain.

Eggplant is wrong. The iphone 3g comes with 5A345 and if u retore with itunes once u get it home, it puts on 5A347 which fixes a few things.

Thanks for both your help, yeah i have two iphone software updates in my itunes folder, both ending in 5A347 (guess i must have downloaded it twice) but thats good to know i have the latest build :) Cheers chaps.

One other quick question, i purchased one app today on my iphone, but for some reason my latest backup has not included it after restoring. It only cost me £2.99 but is there any way to get it back? I tried selecting "check for purchases" via itunes but it says all purchases have been downloaded. Not sure if itunes keeps records of this.

sweet... glad I ran across this thread, I didn't know the version pushed out through iTunes was in fact the newer copy that had leaked online prior to launch. I restored my iPhone 3G with the newer software and will look forward to seeing if it fixes a few of the issues I've encountered. One thing being laggy UI at times and laggy keyboard when I'm typing a url and it searches my history to show me suggestions.

I think you should be able to redownload it without getting charged again. I don't know this from first-hand experience though, just what I've read in a few threads.
