I have a 2019 iMac running 10.6. Have 1gb cable service and was getting 600mb down. All of the sudden it dropped down to 3 mb for a number of days. Thinking it was the wifi card I thought it would be a good opportunity to upgrade to a new 2020 iMac. New iMac arrives today before migration all of the sudden the 2019 goes from from 3mb down back up to 600mb down. Now the wierd part, the new 2020 is running at 3mb. Both iMacs sit 10 feet from the router with no obstruction and when i wire an ethernet cable to the 2020 iMac the download shoots up to 915mb down. Ethernet is not a long term answer because of installation barriers

How can this be. I ready to send the new iMac back, but I would rather upgrade and move forward

Ok, after trying many of the solutions suggested on the internet I finally got it to work by going into system preferences and "forgetting" my network (using - sign to remove). Then rebooting and connecting to the origional network. I will leave this post up to help others with a similar problem

With a fast connection like you have you may be better off using a wired Ethernet connection possible.
The room sits on a concrete slab so wiring it would be near impossible. I do wonder if the ethernet connection would add more stability than the wirelless connection

I would have first moved the iMacs setup next to the router and tested it with ethernet only. Your going to see what's happening rather than guessing about what device in the WIFI chain is barely working. Perhaps what is needed is to go into your WiFI router and assign less used channels, yes that can be helpful, if other close by WiFi hot spots are strong and yours breaks and connects to a neighbors free wifi with way lower speeds as a example. Are you using 2.4GHz or 5 Ghz, 802.11N or 802.11 AC from the router? Is your wifi router old, or is this something like rented gear from your cable provide with is all in one box (cable modem/wifi router)?

I did move the iMac next to the router and connected ethernet. The results were 930 mb down. I have a brand new Eero Pro 6 and new Arris cable modem. I think the problem with the Eero is that it assigns either the 2.4 or 5 channel ( it doesnt give the user the choice). I think when I'm on 5 I get great perfromance but when the system switched me to 2.4 it drops down to 5 mbps. When I got up this morning my performace dropped from 600mbps to 6mps. I had to go into the Mac and turn wifi on and off a few times and forget my network. Since then I'm back over 600 mbps
