I was at home on my mac mini, logged in to my hotmail account using Firefox. I thought I had signed out like I always make sure to do but...

I put my Mac Mini to sleep and left town for one night. I logged in to this same hotmail account multiple times while I was away and always signed out.

I get home and turn on my Mac Mini, open Firefox and my INBOX PAGE FOR HOTMAIL POPS UP! Ok, that's fine, you can see my whole inbox but surely I'm not connected to Windows Live/Hotmail right...

I click one of my messages and bam, it opens. Somebody could have gone through all my e-mails and messages!

Is this because the mac mini was sleep and not shutdown?

I was logged in to my hotmail on 2 computers at once multiple times but I definitely signed out before I returned home.

simple explanation: you didn't log out of hotmail, then you quit firefox (which you have set to show windows and tabs from last time), and put your mini to sleep. when you wake the mini, you started firefox and it restored your previous hotmail session (which you didn't log out of), and you most likely had the "keep me signed in" option checked in hotmail, so it didn't log you out automatically after a set period.
