please help: solution for partition size

hi, i am a new mac user. i will quickly outline my problem. i have used bootcamp to separate my macbook 80gb disk into 2 partitions. i need to resize both of the partitions (steal space from the mac and give it to the NTFS win partition. i have the impression this is not possible with bootcamp 1.2, however i really must do it and losing data is not an option.

one solution i thought is to make a backup image on one of the drives (i have an external usb hard disk), format, change the partition sizes to how i like, then copy back the image. problem is, i'm only a novice pc user and i have no idea how i would do this or what software i should use, or which partition to backup, etc...

so i would really appreciate it if someone could advise me whether this is the best solution or not and also provide some guidelines on how to go about it...

thankyou for your response psychofreak. i have been procrastinating on this whole process because even though the instructions you sent me a good looking at the comments on the bottem of the page they seem to be incomplete and ive been a bit confused.

the authors comment:

"[kirkmc adds: I have not tested this. Make sure you have backups of all your stuff before trying this!]"

is really not encouraging and i am really afraid of it screwing up! but now it is really necessary for me to find a solution cause i have completely exhausted my diskspace.

one of the comments at the bottem mentions a program called netrestore http://www.bombich.com/software/netrestore.html

are you familiar with this and will it help me?

also, what software can i use to back up my wy windows NTFS image?

finally, once i back up my windows image, i will re install mac os x tiger. i dont really want to have the os on the computer at all but it seems i need it in order to run macbook firmware updates etc, but since i only have an 80gb hard disk, i want to keep the installation as small as possible. in the installation from memory it didnt give me any options to economise on additional applications and i think the basic install of tiger took about 25gb !!! this is far too much, its almost a 3rd of my entire disk for an OS which i will never use! how can i cut it down as far as possible?
