Please help urgently - changed user name and broke account, i have work to do.

I dropped windows months ago and bought a mac pro tower... I love it but didnt know what nightmare id create by changing the user in a unix system...

I really scanned through the net for the best looking forum for some urgently needed help. I am new to Macintosh and thought it would be okay to change the user name. I did some research and know exactly what I did wrong.

I erased the user name ONLY from ADVANCED SETTINGS, Changed it from Mac to Verse.

Now after the finder froze up i restarted and...

It's stuck with only one user that says "other" and there is no name or password that will work.

I understand this is a big problem but there must be a way to terminal to fix this right ?

I can see a silhouette of my desktop, there is only one user on this computer.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help, I'll direct everyone i know who has macs to this website. I Produce music for a living and need to build a webisite for a customer tonight.

Reboot the computer while holding down the COMMAND-S keys. This will bring you into single user mode as root.

• Enter: cd /Users
• Enter: ls

Report back what is displayed.

I actually figured it out by using command - S like you said.

then i created a new admin account and here i am on the comp again.

Ive got one other issues now, Ive gone to directory utility and enabled root user in my new admin account

i still have a red block sign and am not allowed access to my old user folders where my invaluable pictures are....

How can I revert the changes and get back into my old account ?

All I did was erase the user ID number and change the name from mac to Verse.

Is there anyway to restore that user file or at least get my files from that user file ?

did NOT touch the home directory, shell, or uuid !!

First of all if you were the only user on the computer when you first setup the computer then the user ID should be 501 not 502. Fill in the 501 for the user ID and staff for group, if you have not already done that in advanced options window. Get out of advanced options. Reboot the computer.

Attempt to login to the "mac" user. Can you get back in?

This worked. I had to do it twice for some reason, but it worked. Thank you brother !!

There is still an "other" user stuck on my login menu, but meh don't log out or even reboot often enough to care.

--the picture i linked was an example of the settings i changed to be clear, from a different site, my original user was 501--

Glad I was able to help. The other account you see at the login window is probably the root user account you enabled previously. If you back into the Directory Utility and disable the root user, the other account will not be shown on the login screen. You have to be very careful using the root user. There are times I need to use it but not all the time.
