My son wants to run a game called Trainz a New Era. The HD and memory I am pretty well versed on....the graphics is a whole other ball of wax. It appears the graphics on this Mac (Iris) will run it, but I am going to ask here to get a better idea if it will, indeed, run. Thx in advance!!!

Mac specs:
  • Intel Iris Pro Graphics
  • 2.7 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 Processor (Turbo Boost up to 3.2 GHz) with 6MB L3 cache
  • 21.5-inch (Diagonal) LED-backlit Display with IPS Technology; 1920-by-1080 Resolution
  • 1TB Hard Drive, 8 GB (Two 4 GB) of 1600MHz DDR3 Memory

If you buy it on Steam, you can refund it within 2 hours of playtime if it doesn't work/run well

You probably won't be able to run the game at full resolution / graphics quality, but it'll definitely run!

He already owns it, but his iMac took a dump and we are looking for a reasonably priced different one.... he was running itit a mid 2011. I have no idea how that compares to the one I listed above? I think the 2011 has the AMD?

Take a screenshot of the "About this Mac" window. It sounds like you're running a Late 2013 15" MacBook Pro, but you mention a Quad-Core Core i5 with Iris Pro and such a CPU never existed in a MacBook Pro. It sounds like this Mac will meet the minimum requirements, but not the recommended. Assuming this game is unlikely to be updated with Apple Silicon support, an Intel Mac mini or 4-port 13" MacBook Pro should be able to run this just fine. Certainly the last 2 generations of 21.5" 4K iMacs and pretty much every 27" iMac dating back to the tapered thin redesign in 2012 ought to run it just fine too.

EDIT: I just realized that you may be on a Late 2013 21.5" iMac, in which case, that will be better in terms of CPU performance than any 2011 iMac, but worse in terms of graphics performance than the AMD graphics in any 2011 iMac. It should still run this game at okay performance levels, but not optimal given that you're still under the recommended requirement of a discrete GPU.

Yes.....it is a late 2013 we are considering (cannot afford a brand new one). His 2011's graphic card died and it appears it may be cheaper to just buy a different one than fix the 2011. There is a pre-owned 2019 that is $800, but for my kid's purpose, I just don't want to drop a ton of money. He doesn't use it heavily for anything other than Mine Craft, Trainz a New Era, and schoolwork. But, if the graphics on the 2013 will be worse than the 2011, I don't know if I want that, either. He doesn't need perfect and jaw-dropping, but something acceptable and where the differences are barely noticeable.

My child has asked me to post the specs for this 2017.....LOL

Considering he's coming from a 4 (ram), I think he can tolerate it:). 8 would be like lightning.
