Please HELP

I have an internal and an external hard drive. the external is partitioned into two. one day i noticed that the icon for the internal wasnt on my desktop. so i used spotlight to try and find it and drag it back or at least make an alias of it. doesnt find it. if i do some digging i can sometimes find it buried but it is gray and i cant click it. if i try and install something it immediatly finds it and says that i can install on the volume, so i know it stll is working. can anybody think of what i might have done and possibly how to get it back.

Perhaps try running Disk Utility to verify/repair the disk?

Have you done the basics? Like Disk Repair in Disk Utility?
Sounds like some basic maintenance is in order.

Other than that what kind of Mac and OS and other specs please.

You are booting the machine successfully from the external drive? Is that how you normally boot?

If you open Disk Utility (in OSX, located in Applications: Utilities), does the name of your internal drive show up on the left in the Disk Utility window?

It helps in getting faster and more accurate responses if you detail the machine you are using and the operating system version. Also, you can make the title of your thread relevant to the quesion being asked. This is the 3,006th thread entitled "help"

Ok im sorry i have a 20"iMac g5 with the isight osx 10.4.8 and i am booting from the internal. and when i do disk utility it does find it. i tried labeling the thread something else and someone came in ad said to ignore me or something so i got no responses.

Don't understand. You said that the internal drive is not showing on the desktop - now you say you are successfully booting from it. Both statements cannot be true simultaneously.

What do you mean you find the icon of the hard drive buried?
Do oyou mean obscured by other items on your Desktop, or within folders on the hard drive?

Once you find the drive with Disk Utility, please run Repair Permissions.
Then, boot from your OSX DVD (restart with the OSX DVD in, and hold the "c" key down on your keyboard until the machine boots into the installer. DO NOT INSTALL. instead, choose, from the Installer menu at the top, Disk Utility. Find your internal hard drive, and do a Repair Disk.

Report on the results.

To clear up some of the confusion...Timma made a previous thread on this (with a full title). Irish Dave replied to it, and then realized that he had misread the question, so he deleted his responses and said to ignore his posts. Timma mistakenly took that to mean that everyone should ignore his thread.

Whew.

That said, I have nothing further to add to this than to agree with what CanadaRAM suggested. More clarification would definitely help us diagnose your problem.

Stupid idea worth trying. From the desktop choose View > Arrange By > Name

Does your internal drive show up in the Finder just fine?

What about Finder > Prefences > General > (Show) Hard Disks?
