I am a musician and I need to build a website for myself where I can store an exhibit examples of my work. It does not need to look so good at moment. Just plain and simple will work for now. I want to do all the work myself. I have researched domain name/hosting packages like Godaddy and Mochahost and that seems pretty simple but I have no idea how to actually create a website with links to things and where to store the data that should be contained in those links. Where should I start?

First you need a domain name and host. Many people here like http://www.asmallorange.com. Its easiest to do your hosting and domain purchase with the same company as it will save you headaches when getting your domain name talking to your server (speaking from painful experience).

How fluent are you in making a website?
For example:
Do you know that the frontpage will always be index.html?

I'm just trying to guage your knowledge. Secondly, what kind of software do you have to create the html pages? iWeb, Rapidweaver, etc. ?

Hey thanks for the reply.

index.html? No clue what you mean. I know "html" is a language but that's about it.

I am a total newbie. As far as software I have whatever comes with OS X if there's anything. Is there anything free you can recommend?

If you're not looking for anything too fancy in terms of your website, you might want to consider iWeb. It's a simple drag and drop affair. I know nothing about HTML and I've created a couple of decent looking websites with iWeb.

iWeb. I don't see that in my applications folder. Maybe I left it out when I did a custom install. Should I have it on my C2D MBP?

Now, do I need a .mac account or anything to use iWeb to create a webpage?

iWeb is part of the iLife '06 package. If you bought your mac since it came out, you'll have it, if not, it's available to buy. link

Hopefully, the next version of iLife will be availble in the not too distant future. There are rumours abounding on this site about when that will be. After all, it is MacRumors!

You can always use the Web Templates in MS Word. You can make some nice websites like that :D

Seriously, iWeb is a cinch to use, so i recommend that.

Some webhosting companies, such as lycos, also have on-line website builders as well. You could give that a go. In fact, you can have a go on Lycos for free by the looks of it.

For cheap, good and easy go for Rapidweaver or iWeb, both aplications will do the job nicely for you with little fuss and effort.
