I use Internet Download Manager on my Windows PC and have tried many alternatives, Downie is the closest to IDM and it intercepts downloads automatically from the browser to download streaming videos unlike other apps which require you to manually copy/paste the URL

I tried it out on Saturday and bought it this morning. I normally use a Firefox extension to download videos but the extension's performance is really poor for some videos. I downloaded one video from Vimeo and it took a few minutes on Downie while it usually takes an hour on the Firefox extension. Vimeo chunks their videos and the extension takes forever reassembling the chunks. This is for one of my financial services which puts out five videos a month so they have to password protect it

I also recommend 4k Video Downloader, which is limited to well known services, and jdownloader, which is less user-friendly, but very powerful—jdownloader does the old Safari trick of checking the page source and downloading resource files but, unlike doing it manually in Safari, also snags the resources referred to by m3u playlist files.

I just downloaded a video from Hedgeye. It took 20 seconds. It normally takes 20 minutes using my Firefox video downloader. This program is seriously efficient.

Thanks for the recommendation for Downie. Just downloaded the trial and if it's as good as I hear, I'll be buying it!
I tried Downie, too, and bought it immediately. It's faster and more reliable than anything I've used on Mac or Windows. A great discovery.

The amount of time that it saves me in downloading financial stuff had it paying for itself in a week. It's well-done software and very efficient. I've never seen a downloader do a better job with all kinds of different kinds of files - the best thing is that it handles chunked files with ease.
