Please someone explain iTunes match premise

Ok, I signed up, uploaded, and enabled iTunes match on my iPhone 4s, and ipad2. I was leery when it said "iTunes match will replace the library on this device" :-| but I thought, oh well maybe it won't be that bad......it was.
iTunes match then deletes all current playlists, (which do not come back if you disable iTunes match) and starts downloading ALL OF MY 13,000+ songs and I don't want that!!!! I want my music available to download AT WILL...... Do I just not get it???? Or what and of course you don't get your money back for it (tried that) #soconfusedandpissedoff

Whoa now, simmer down. I doubt iTunes Match started downloading all 13000 of your songs, as it is not supposed to do that. It is however supposed to SHOW you all those songs. Anything with a cloud next to it is in the cloud, not on your phone. If you touch a song, it will then begin to play, and download in the background. So your music is available at will, just like you asked. iTunes Match allows you to access all your music on any Mac or iOS device at any times, thats it.

I would say that describes about everyone who purchased it the first week. I'm still seeing posts where subtle actions are discovered.

@oasis: oh but it did and it totally started downloading completely random songs from my collection unprovoked. I was astonished and noticed it only after it choked my Internet to nill. (not the fastest Internet btw).

@iphone: I had read the articles, watched the keynote and read all the rumors. I figured like most things apple, it would be simple, sleek, and a blast to use. However my experience thus far is less than par IMHO.


Got a reply from express lane and nothing new. I get a genuine introduction followed by a few robot paragraphs with intermittent links to articles and a 'have a nice day closer'. I must say I've never had a bad customer service experience from apple EVER until this issue. I love apple products and services. Just don't know what happened to this

Your predicament seems fairly atypical. Can you list all the steps you did exactly as you did them? iTunes match should not download anything without user intervention. It merely matches or uploads unmatched songs to the servers. It does however UPLOAD all unmatched songs, which may choke your internet.

let's be sure we're using the correct terminology. "downloading" and propagating are 2 different things. Match will propagate your computer or device with the track info for everything on the cloud. that does not mean it is downloading all of it. the premise is, your entire library is visible to you at all times, and you can tap any song to play/download it.

Steps taken:
1.) purchase iTM
2.) spend 3 days uploading (not the fastest Internet :-( )
3.) enable iTM on iPhone
4.) all playlists deleted by iTM
5.) disabled iTM on iPhone playlists did not return
6.) enabled iTM on iPad
7.) tried to download only ONE song
8.) chaos ensues

I think what clinched my disdain for the service is that you cannot manage your songs on your phone/device manually (drag and drop) I mean why the heck not?!?!
