I've just bought a second hand Apple TV and Mac Mini G4. My aim is to have the mini in one room with lots of external HD attached as well as eye tv. All movies and TV shows and music and photos to be on the external drives. I'll use this to watch them in this room (the den). I then want to stream al of this on demand to the apple TV.

Will teh apple tv recognise these HD, will this work? what haven't I though of?

I don't have an AppleTV (thinking of buying one soon), so I'm not 100% certain, but it should read external HDs no problem so long as your iTunes library is on the external HD or the media files reside there but are referenced to the iTunes library on the Mac mini.

As for streaming EyeTV recorded shows, I think these are recorded in MPEG2, no? You'll have to convert them to MPEG4 (h.264 or not, your choice) first.

If your going to watch movies while they stream wirelessly, it might not work very well unless your Mac Mini has 802.11n.

nope. the mac mini will be fine. i view videos over my 802.11g network and i have never had a problem. but take this into consideration, you are not actually 'streaming' the videos. streaming implies you watching live-feed content from the source. where in fact with the apple TV you are downloading to the appleTV then watching from the download. but yeah, this should be a good set up.

Thanks for the replies - for a moment I thought I had made an expensive mistake!
