Okay so ATV3 is here now ..

ALL Plex is doing for me is streaming my content from my Mac to my devices.

My question is.

Can i rip my Blu rays to my Mac in a format (if so which format?) and import them to iTunes for streaming to my ATV?

Can i keep them at 40GBish full blu ray rip file sizes and not loose quality like i can in Plex?

Yes and Yes.

I use MakeMKV to backup my blu-rays. Handbrake will then convert to MP4 or M4V for you.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9B179 Safari/7534.48.3)

So can you simplify this fr me and write me a step by step?

Thanks :)

handbrake will transcode video always (some loss in quality). If you want to keep the full bluray then you need to remux after ripping with makemkv. iFlicks and Subler are two such apps that will remux to mp4 for playback in itunes/apple tv. For DTS audio, this will have to be transcoded though to DD 5.1. iFlicks will do this during remuxing (DD will pass through). I dont know if other apps do this. Regardless, HD-audio, if you care about it, is not possible in mp4 for quicktime based playback. The new ATV should have no problem playing them--the iPad 2 plays remuxed blurays perfectly.

Should the remux be into mp4 or m4v? I'm in a similar situation as I already have my blu-ray movies ripped to m2ts and am thinking about buying my first appletv and would like to do the same thing as the OP.

m4v.

jesus im dumb!

I dont understand a word lol

Convert to MKV using MakeMKV. Okay easy.

Then convert in Handbrake to MP4?

And thats it done - import to itunes and i have a 1080p blu ray right there?

Can i just add my thoughts?

Why do you need convert to m4v.? If you've got it in MKV whats your problem using plex?

I rip some blu rays myself and (naughtily) download some .MKV's online... save them all in my drobo downstairs, and then stream around the house to various apple tv's... Works fine...

Why add the extra step of using handbrake to convert to m4v?

Because I wouldn't have to wait for a JB, it would just natively work in ATV

The iPad can play remixed blu rays (originally ripped into .mkv files using MakeMKV) at their native bitrates? Really? I've encoded a bunch of .mkv rips into .m4v files with fairly high bitrates (10-12 Mbps) but didn't think it (iPad or :apple:TV) had the horsepower to handle native blu ray bitrates. Don't native rip bitrates approach 35-40 Mbps? Also, doesn't remuxing still result in a pretty large file size (25-40 GB)? That would limit the number of movies you could load directly onto the iPad.

I know you can use the PLEX app on the iPad to stream these files to the iPad but in that case, isn't your computer handling the streaming/encoding workload?

JBing isnt a major deal, and you never know, apps might become availible... plex app that works natively?

I just dont see the point in you adding another step and transcoding your files to M4V's... Streaming from itunes as an MP4 or streaming from Plex as MKV's your still going to get the same result!

Jailbreak will be out soon for 5.0, that or (assuming you have a iphone or ipad) just use airplay...

That doesn't support 5.1 ...

Personally, I'll wait for Plex to come out for a jailbroken atv3 before upgrading my apple tv in the living room. I've gotten spoiled by being able to play my video library without devoting the cpu cycles and time to trans-coding. In my experience, I've always gotten quality loss when moving from mkv to m4v/mp4, anyway.

Having MyPlex and being able to watch my stuff on the go doesn't hurt either. :)

I don't think it's a Plex killer.
With Plex, I don't have to transcode files; just rip them and go.
