At 10 years old, the drive may have failed.
If it's an SSD inside... well... sometimes they just "go dark", never to work again.

BUT... TRY THIS FIRST:

Boot to INTERNET recovery.
This is NOT THE SAME as "the recovery partition"
Try
Command-OPTION-R
at boot

You'll need your wifi password.
It takes a little time for the utilities to load, be patient.

When you get to the utilities, open disk utility.
VERY IMPORTANT: if there is a "view" menu you must go to it and choose "show all devices".

Look at "the list on the left".
Can you see the physical internal drive now?
It should be the "top item"

If you CAN see it, try "first aid".
Might help.

If you CANNOT see it...
... probably time to start shopping for a replacement Mac.

The latest m2 MacBooks are very nice indeed.
