I'm thinking about buying an Apple TV, I have really been following any news about software for it etc. I would like to know if there are any plugins available yet to play .avi or .mkv files?

There are hacks. And can be found quite easily searching this forum. But currently they require a bit of work. I haven't tried any myself yet.
