hi everyone,

here is my system:

mac pro 4.1 (early 2009)
CPU : 2 x Xeon E5520 2.26GHz (8 cores, 16 threads)
GPU : Gtx 980 msi gamig 4g
Ram : 9gb ddr3
Hard drive : 640gb

when i load dota 2, the screen is frozen, the CPU run at 170%!!!

plz help me, what can i do for playing this game?

I'm thinking about upgrading from 4.1 to 5.1 and buy new CPUs (X5680 or X5690) ?!?

Anyone play dota on your mac pro? please give me some advice

What is the cheapest upgrade to play Dota 2 with 60 fps or more in Best Looking mode?

thank you

You mean the game doesn’t work in OSX?

Hi h9826790,

Dota 2 does work in OSX. I played dota 2 on my imac late 2012, it works well but i cannot play in highest resolution cuz the graphic card is a 512mb so i've bought a Macpro 4.1 and a 980gtx to play it. I can load the game but when i try to "watch game" i cannot, the CPU ran at 170% and the screen is like 1 frame per 2,3 seconds. I don't know why. Have I upgrade the CPUs?

Thanks

A gaming forum is probably a better place to get advice on running Windows games at high FPS rates. First of all, a Mac Pro (or really any kind of workstation class computer) is a pretty expensive way of getting good gaming performance.
To be honest I have no idea what DOTA2 requires to run at 60 fps in Best Looking mode at any resolution, but you can bet your ass that the cheapest way to get there is a homebuilt PC with one or two latest-gen medium-to-high-end gaming graphics cards.

I never play DOTA 2, but suspected few possibilities.

1) Multi CPU cause the issues. (It rarely happen, but occasionally multi CPU cause error / crash on some software)
2) GPU / driver issue (it's very easy to test, put your original GPU back in and you will know the answer straight away)
3) Software issue (by considering it can run flawlessly on iMac, the chance is very low, but not entirely impossible)
4) Other hardware issue (but really hard to think about which part can bottleneck to a level at 1 FPS but not total crash)

Anyway, for PS and gaming, you basically pick the wrong config cMP. You need fast CPU, but not high core count. Multi CPU setup may cause you more problem than benefit.

You have 8C16T (total 1600% CPU), and your game can only utilise 170% (which means only ~10% of your total processing power). Definitely not the best situation.

Thank you so much

I also have read somewhere that Dota 2 need high clockspeed but not cores number. My CPUs clockspeed is limited to 2,26Ghz I'm thingking to upgrade my CPUs to 2 x X5690 (or X5680). Do you think it will resolve the issue?

Thanks again

Before you do crazy hardware upgrades, consider installing windows on a separate hard drive for gaming. OSX is just terrible at gaming, and your gtx 980 runs under beta support even with the latest nvidia drivers. It is essentially an upclocked 780.

Moving to windows would be a more of upgrade for this than any hardware upgrade could achieve under OS X.
