I just started to listen podcasts since my commute got longer. Podcasts.app is ok, but definitely lacking in some ways.

I would like suggestions on a better app for this. Recently discovered if I download individual episodes of podcasts I don’t subscribe to, I can’t see them in CarPlay. I get one kicks of listening to podcasts on one subject.

Ultimately, I need something that allows the aforementioned functionality. It obviously needs to work with CarPlay and would like a playlist option as well. I’m ok paying for an app, I don’t want to have to buy a bunch to try them out.

Bonus would be if it would sync with my already downloaded episodes/subs.

Thanks.

A few great (pay once) Podcast apps that have tons of customization options and CarPlay support:

- iCatcher! Podcast Player (2.99 euro)
- Downcast (2.99 euro)

Subscription based:
- Pocket Casts (0.99 euro a month / 9.99 euro a year)

Thank you!

Downcast has come across in my research.

I will need to look into the options they offer. I’m good with buying an app as long as it works.

Overcast is my go-to podcast app. It has a subscription option to get rid of (non-intrusive in-app) ads. It also supports downloading shows from non-subscribed podcasts and playing them in CarPlay.

+1 to Overcast. I was a big fan of Pocket Casts and recently tried out Overcast and fell in love. CarPlay is great and podcasts sync seamlessly between all of my iOS devices.

Originally I used Downcast and then in the end ended up with iCatcher which I love. Both apps have been around for years. Since I listen mostly on my headphones (and car and don't own a car with CarPlay) I love the fact that iCatcher as one of the few podcasts apps supports Apple Shortcuts Automation to listed to my (offline) playlists with a press of a button without having to open the app and connect my headphones.

I’m trying out Overcast currently. It somewhat does what I’m looking for. I’m only trying it since it only had in-app purchases and if I don’t like it, I’m no worse for wear. The search function leaves a lot to be desired and I don’t see any settings or refinements to change the current behavior. It lets me see episodes I downloaded in CarPlay so that’s a huge boon. Overcast appears to have an import option, but podcasts doesn’t look to have an export option. I’m part way there. I may have to pull the trigger on Downcast or iCatcher.
