hello, I'm after some recommendations for podcast client apps for Mac OS. For me iTunes of 10 years ago was perfect and everything has gotten worse since then. I don't think I have partially fussy requirements, my main request is that I want to be able to store my library on an external drive for space reasons. Other than that I just want a basic interface that lists the podcasts and allows me to control downloads/refreshes. I don't need device syncing as I only listen on my MacBook.

I'd even accept a CLI/script at this point if it worked.

I had been using Mimir but it's started to crash all the time sadly so think it is time to find something new.

Hey, I tend to use Overcast on both iPhone and Mac.

There are two issues with it, keeping in mind your requirements:
1. That's an iOS app, so you'd need M1 Mac to get it running.
2. AFAIK, it stores all data on main drive. I never needed to move data around to external drive as it rotates files effectively for me.

Hope this helps.

+1 for Overcast. Apple's Podcast app absolutely sucks, and I have yet to find a podcast app that is simple and functional. With that in mind, I see no reason to "download" podcasts to begin with. Overcast just streams each podcast without the need to download. It also has quite a few nice features.

The upside if you have an M1 Mac, you can download the iOS app to your Mac and use it like a normal macOS app – it's really nice!
