Anyone tried it or can comment on the other iPod version?

I haven't bought GTR or Asphalt 4 since I'm worried they are just to complicated for a portable game. While something colorful, simple, and especially retro might be fun for short burst of play.

Though, from one review of an iPod version of this game, it was said to be boring because of long stretches of nothing, few other cars, and the clickwheel design was flawed since it also accelerated when you tried to turn. Maybe they've fixed it up and with a touch wheel or accelerometer control, it might hold up better.

They charge twice as much on the iPhone. Sharper graphics, yes, but they better have some work put into it to justify the higher price compared to the cheaper iPod version. I have hope since many early reviews on iTunes from those who bought it say it's clear they built it from ground up for the iPhone .

I never played the arcade version, but I grew up playing the heck out of something similar on a Game Gear.

Here's a look at the history of the original game:

If it was $5, I'd buy it now, but at $9.99, I think I'd better wait for an official review.

Review with video: http://toucharcade.com/2008/09/14/namcos-retro-racer-pole-position-remix/

It's ok. I doubt it's significantly improved (game-wise) from the iPod version, but I never played the iPod version. The iPhone-ness of it comes in the controls which are good... but it's mostly of retro-value I would say. So unless you were a big pole position fan, I wouldn't generally recommend it (at least for $10).

I think Asphalt 4 or GTR are much better games and not too complicated for portable play. For a racer, I'd go with Asphalt 4 which is probably the best general racer at the moment. Kart racers are different, and [app]Cro-Mag Rally[/app] might be worth it now since it's only $1.99 (on sale).
