is there any way to polish out a few minor scratches on the top of the display? top of the case with laptop shut, looking down at it next to the apple.

Because polishing something is to make it shiny, I'm going to recommend Brasso.

ok, not to make it shiny... but is there a way to remove the scratches? or make them not as bad looking. 2 small scratches on the cover bother me.

Have you tried toothpaste; it works for watch glass sometimes.

I've been searching the forums and found some people talking about Brasso. Some say go for it, some say no way. I'll try toothpaste in the morning and let you guys know. we'll see I guess.....

Instead of polishing, have you considered "hiding" the scratches with something like the invisibleshield or bestskinever? I think it will do a good job in hiding the scratches, and protect it from future scratches.

I hate the feeling of the plastic shield when I can touch the precious aluminum casing of the air:)

I've used iDrops from PodShop, and they've worked well at removing plastic scratches from Macbooks and iPods, as well as iPod screens. They may be able to help with your screen issue.

Thanks so much for all the replies. I just can't decide what to do. I've thought about brasso but think it's too abrasive.

I've thought about toothpaste.. but toothpaste is a polish and I don't really want it to be "polished" considering the surface is not really polished at all.

I've though about using a variety of things but I really just can't decide what to do about them.

I'd say don't do anything...rubbing with an abrasive whether it is toothpaste or brasso will just make the situation worse because all you are doing is creating fine microscratches that will hide the original scratch. Microscratches will reflect light differently than the original unmarred surface and in the end you have a MBA with dull spots on the Al. :(
