Lets forget about 2.2 vs 2.4 and whatnot (I know 2.4 probably runs hotter but no use making this complicated)

Leave your MBP to run for about an hour and a half doing regular tasks then report your temperature. Basically I want the highest temperature it would hit, because if you leave it on for several hours it will hit this temp and stay at it indefinitely.

If you don't know how to check your temperature, download the free iStat Widget (google it or get it from apple's widget download page)
 
mine usually ranges from 54-59...at the time of the vote, it was 57...now i'm writing this and it's 54...so yea...when i watch videos and stuff it'll be low 60s...ripping cds and encoding, it'll be high 70s with or without fans going at medium (around 4000rpm)...when it gets to around 80s, the fans start kicking in at high rpm (around 5000rpm)
 
Mine is about 53 or so usually when I'm doing menial tasks and running azureus and adium in the background. I wish it would be in the 40s but oh well.
 
I guess its kind of biased since some people have them on different surfaces than others.

Try to get the temperature when it is on a regular surface and not some sort of cooling mat or anything.

We need to get more votes to get a nice curve idea of what the average temperature should be!
 
It would be really cool if Macrumors had a users poll or something aggregate.
 
Doing normal task such as safari, itunes (pulling songs from a networked drive),and adium it runs between 48~51c and fans running a little below 2k rpm. Then if i start watching videos in itunes or quicktime while doing other task it'll easily reach 60c+
 
DELL notebooks are much worse in terms of heat. I've never actually owned one, but a girl I work with brought her brand new vista laptop in the other day and you can literally feel a field of uncomfortable heat around the machine.
 
Currently 57, running VMware Fusion with a couple applications, Entourage, iTunes, Safari and Adium. But if I'm running HandBrake for a DVD rip, it's much hotter. smcFanControl is a Godsend when I have those moments. :)

I might have to disagree. I have had 2 Dell laptops and an IBM thinkpad before owning a 2.4 MBP. My MBP, which I prefer over the others, runs hotter than all of them.

I thought nothing could be hotter than my last dell...but I was wrong.

SMCfancontrol does help, though.

My new (3 week old 2.4) runs way cooler than original 1.83GHz unit I had since April-06.... This one hovers near 50ºC under "normal" usage.... Original one was at least 15º Hotter!! Big difference to my legs if used as Laptop!!

The New Fans (in 2.4 GHz)) Idle near 2000RPM; Original (in 1.83 GHz) were high 900's... and when these "Ramp Up" under usage they go All the Way Up to 6000RPM til they reduce Temp to where they feel comfortable I guess...

Seems to work well so far!! ;)
 
somewhere around 50° at the moment with fans around 2k rpm.
But it was much higher when I played battlefield 2142 a couple of hours ago :D
 
this poll is useless, the two different systems 2.4 and 2.2 are going to be different, the surface you're using it on its going to be different, the "common tasks" are going to vary between different people, vmware fusion is going to use a lot more cpu power then me surfing, IMing e-mailing, and ituneing all at the same time...

also a big difference maker is the temp of the room you are currently in, someone sitting in a office thats 70 degrees is going to run a lot cooler than someone sitting in a room thats 80 degrees or someone sitting outside where its 87 degrees....

so really theres no good way to conduct this poll, as you can see from the results, the temps all all over the place, there is no common temp, the closest is the 43-45

when i voted my laptop was at 47c sitting on the table, now that i picked it up and set it on my lap, the AC is blowing on it and its dropped to 41c
 
Well it still gives an idea, but I guess it should have been more specific. Maybe we should get a new poll where we all put it on the same specific surface type (and maybe have 2 polls, one for 2.2 and one for 2.4).

Right now I'm encoding and its hitting 82 degrees. I would imagine the fans would kick in earlier and harder, but I guess I was wrong. fans are only at 4k RPM.

fans are based on the memory controler
 
My 2.4 generally sits around 45-50 doing normal stuff (browsing, iTunes photos...) but it jumps up to 70~ playing Rise of Nations. That makes sense to me, it being a game and running in Rosetta, so that's fair enough.

The temperature control in Windows doesn't seem as good as in OS X, then again I don't have a temp measuring app in Windows, and all I do in XP is play games. :)

NO doubt the MBP runs pretty hot.
However, something that almost nobody mentions is that the fans do their job, and they do it quietly. I was really impressed with their low noise level. From 2000 through 4000 they're hardly audible. They become noticeable only at 6000 rpm, but still their noise is not irritating (unlike many other laptops I've seen - or rather, heard:eek:)

I'd just like to add, the thing I love most about my MBP is its quietness! Coming from a C/solo mini to this, the noise levels are similar between the two when the Mini is idling & MBP is at around 4k+ rpm. It used to be so irritating. Now I can do my work in peace :)
 
Does anyone know if running an external monitor/extended desktop would make the MBP heat up more? I feel like for some reason my last SR MBP ran cooler than my new one. They were identical except one was a Samsung screen with yellow issue. The new one is LG.

I feel the same way actually. I dunno if an external display makes it warmer, I would think maybe a little, but my older one was abit cooler. Not that I'd take it over my new one with LG screen because I much prefer a little more heat over a yellowish bottom of my screen.
 
Anyone else who has experienced both Samsung and LG. Did you find any difference in how hot the MBP ran? I found my Samsung running cooler. I know it has nothing to do with the screen but maybe something else is different besides just the screen?
