Now that the MBA has been out in the wild for just over a month, I am wondering what peoples' impressions are.

I find it very useful, perfect for my needs, and just what I expected.

I know that others have suffered through some Rev A teething (cores shutting down, loud fans, etc.).

Let's hear from the owners out there. Those who hate the MBA and would never buy one need not respond please. This is a thread to inform those for whom the MBA might be appropriate.

Before the whiners get here....

All the naysayers almost had me canceling my order in the long wait period between the announcement { I ordered the morning after } and the deliveries.

I have used this every single day now since I got mine, the week they started shipping. And some comments:

One - I fondle it as much as I did my wife when she was new too, this is just a VERY sexy machine to hold, use and show off.

Two - My needs are mostly surfing, writing, and light graphics, but I have done a few conversions into H.264 renderings that went acceptably. And frankly, in the real world uses, I really can't tell much, if any, differences between the operating speeds between my 1.6/80 MBA and my 2.4 iMac, late 2007.

When you combine this with the new Time Capsule/Machine for wireless storage, and I use this for my "sometimes files" that I really don't access constantly too, it is plenty of storage. And if you need "more" you can grab a tiny little external like I have with 80GB that weighs maybe five ounces.

I bought the external CD drive, but frankly now, I wonder why I did. If you get this wireless thing, and REALLY understand this, you really don't need a CD reader if you are normally around other machines, since "borrowing" their DVD readers is fast, easy, and works just fine.

As for all the "lack of ports" whiners, I bought an external hub for $20 bucks, and have used it a few times when needed. And I have the Ethernet dongle too, but i actually pulled it off, and now just used wireless since I got the Time Capsule, it is every bit as fast for what I do wirelessly as the hardwired direct was.

All in all, I AM VERY SURPRISED that I have had zero "Buyers Remorse" and daily I'm loving this thing more and more.

Loving it, no problems at all.

Virtually no noticable speed difference between it and my old MBP, completely silent most of the time and so easy to travel with, exactly what i needed.

*Ahem* Well, I don't fondle mine, but I do get interesting reactions from people. On top of that, it's very light and the thinness works very well from a portability perspective - I've owned a PB12 in the past and I think the thinness is more valuable than the thicker, shorter form factor. This is like sliding a legal pad into my briefcase.

My most recent previous work system was a first gen MBP15, with the 2.0 Gig CPU and 2GB of RAM. The performance between that and the MBA ranks at least equal, for most work tasks I think the MBA is faster. The only time that's not the case is if I am doing anything where the Intel graphics slow me down.

My workload consists of standard office-type tasks (email, docs, spreadsheets, presentations) plus some network engineering (various network tools, plus an XP VM in Fusion, with Visio and Project), some lightweight development, some iTunes, and websurfing. Works great for everything I mentioned. Once again, the form factor is a great boon to one on the road all the time.

Note that I haven't had any of the fan issues some complain of - mine spins up under a graphics load but I have not (knock on wood) seen the performance issues accompanying that which some have reported.

When you combine this with the new Time Capsule/Machine for wireless storage, and I use this for my "sometimes files" that I really don't access constantly too, it is plenty of storage. And if you need "more" you can grab a tiny little external like I have with 80GB that weighs maybe five ounces.
I carry an external 250GB WD usb-powered drive. I carried it with me before the MBA so that's no added inconvenience. I rarely go to it for anything, though - the 80GB drive is really pretty much all I need for work items. Once in a while I will swap project data back and forth, but that's about it. This is more about workflow than anything for me.
I bought the external CD drive, but frankly now, I wonder why I did. If you get this wireless thing, and REALLY understand this, you really don't need a CD reader if you are normally around other machines, since "borrowing" their DVD readers is fast, easy, and works just fine.
Not sure I agree here - when I need to use a CD it's nice to have the drive. Personally I still maintain this should have been included in the box.
Could not agree less. One more USB port would make a world of difference. I too carry a micro hub, but this fails me on occasion: I want to use my external drive plus ethernet - oops, can't do it. Or my Superdrive plus external drive - once again, fail. One more USB port and this problem is solved.
All in all, I AM VERY SURPRISED that I have had zero "Buyers Remorse" and daily I'm loving this thing more and more.

I rated it perfect, but it's not quite. In general though, I recommend the MBA depending on how you plan to use it. It is not a leatherman do anything tool, but it's a pretty good Swiss Army pocketknife with a screwdriver and can opener attached! It works great for me as my primary work system, but I'm sure I would be disappointed if I were trying to use it as a gaming rig as well - it doesn't serve that purpose well. Of course for that I have a desktop syste at my house.

But for work, the MBA is my tool of choice now - and I don't regret it.

Just got back from Vegas with the Air....it was an absolute joy to bring along, as I got to leave my 17" Pro at home this time. That thing is a tank compared to the Air. Long story short, this puppy is perfect for traveling....my back thank Apple.

I absolutely love my MBA 1.6/80GB. I am a little annoyed with the heating issues and how long it takes to charge. I am hoping Apple works them out in a firmware update.

(P.S. Apple - Please dont take a year to release the firmware update)

I love my Air.

I messed up my foot and have been laid up on the couch for a few days.

I've played many videos, watched A LOT of youtube and no heat issues.

In the three weeks I've had it, I heard the fan maybe three times max.

Right now I'm doing some work on my G5 through screen sharing while laying on the couch. This is awesome!!!:D

I am on my 2nd unit. The first one died on me after 3 weeks.(hdd) They replaced it and now I have a loose click on the trackpad, also it wobbles when the screen is open all the way.

I am in between on what to do. Do you guys prefer to get it replaced again for these issues?

The design is phenomenal but revision A makes me regret the purchase.

Loving it! You cannot beat it for portability. This is my second one, as my first one had issues. The SSD went out before two weeks were up, but this one has been humming along! I actually have another 1.8/64, new in the box, which I will probably put up for sale. It was a replacement for the first one.

I'm totally impressed...

as are my friends, family and the passerby. Definite eyecatcher, but I'm in 7th heaven when it comes to writing papers, internet searches, academic premier search on campus, and the strong internet connection via WiFi at all my usual hot spots with AT&T throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. It was funny this morning while waiting for the BART train, there were three of us using our iPhones and two of us had our MBA's on our laps catching up on some writing and internet searching. Definitely the "greatest experience" for me as a 100% Mac User!

Sounds like bad luck though we do have 10% regretting their purchase due to Rev. A issues. Still, if you love the way the Air works when it does work, I'd swap.

Since no option in the poll applied to my experience, I didn't take it.

I love many things about my MBA, especially its lightness, the keyboard and trackpad, and its speed (coming from a 1st generation Powerbook G4, this one feels extremely snappy). It suits my needs (academic writing, a lot of emailing and some light photo management) very well.

Onto the not so great part: Screen issues! As a matter of fact, I am having two types of screen issues. Hooking the MBA up to my external monitor sends the fans crazy, which is a problem for me. Worse still is the screen of the MBA unit itself. A 1.5 inch bright streak runs from the middle of the bottom of the screen to just below the top left corner. While invisible at full brightness (which is why I didn't notice it right away), it is glaringly obvious at 1-10 "brightness bars". Unfortunately, I cannot part with the computer right now as I need it for a project I am working on. However, I am planning to get in touch with Apple in order to discuss what my options are. I basically assume that they will either replace the unit or the screen--it's that bad.

In conclusion: This is a great machine, however, my experience with an extremely unevenly lit screen detracts so much from the user experience that it is difficult to justify a raving review. With a perfect screen, I would have given it 87/100.

I love my Air

I do work on it that I've been putting off doing for quite some time. I'm now doing it because it's on my Air so, my productivity is up. My contentment with the purchase increases daily. I have the 1.8 64g SSD 1.8 and made the right decision for me.

I had that white streak thing too and Apple captured it for engineering and gave me a new one. The new one also had it, but to a much lesser degree. They replaced that one for another issue. The third one had a darker streak in the same sport and a dead adapter so I returned it and went back to a MBP for now. Can't wait for the next revision.....

Great thread! Makes me want to sell my MBP so I can buy an MBA!
Do you guys think I should wait a couple of weeks so Apple can figure out the kinks. i.e. fan noise, heat, LCD, HD tick?
