Poll: Memory card slot in Merom MBP?

Would you like to see a memory card slot in the next revision of the MacBook Pro? I would. I have one in my Acer laptop and use the SD and MS Pro slots quite a bit. They should have a 5 in 1 like

1. Secure Digital (SD)
2. MultiMediaCard (MMC)
3. Memory Stick (MS)
4. Memory Stick Pro (MS Pro)
5. xD

SD being the most popular I am sure a lot of people would find this very handy as I have.

I doubt it very much but if they did, I am 100% sure that they would include the most popular/standardized professional media - a.k.a. Compact Flash.

P.S. - Secure Digital and Multi Media Card are the same exact thing with the only exception being a write protection switch that is available on SD

frankly, i'd rather they not. I like expressCard just fine, and you can now get CF readers for it, which means i'm good. I'd rather they give me another USB port and FW800 too on the 15" model.

a card reader would probably mean less space, meaning potential elimination of expresscard. Not good, because I like my FW400 and eSATA expresscards!

No. I don't want them to add a memory card slot. The only thing Apple needs to do is to replace the ExpressCard 3/4 slot with an ExpressCard 5/4 slot. Then the consumer can choose whatever card he or she desires, since any card will physically fit. With the current slot, CompactFlash cards won't fit. This makes no sense at all considering that they are the most common media for digital cameras and the like. If they put in a memory card slot, like the one on the Toshiba I'm typing on, it's just a waste of space, especially if it becomes incompatible with future revisions or versions of that format. For example, MemoryStick readers and MemoryStick Pro cards; CF Type I and Type II.

I don't understand why people are opposed to this. Would a small slot on one side being that much of a problem? You wouldn't even see it when you were using your laptop.

I personally would love this. I hate having to get out my 5 in 1 reader and cable every time I want to upload photos. And when your on the go, this would be a huge plus.

The problem for me wouldn't be the opening(s) but the dead space involved to allow for card insertion. Apple being as size & space conscientious as they are, already opted for less features in a smaller form factor - EX. 15 inch MBP not having DL -DVD/RW or FW800

I wouldn't like to have the card reader. I think it would cheapen the appearance of the computer. I could see it in the MacBook (still wouldn't want it) but definitely not in the MacBook Pro. What's so difficult about using an external card reader? Or just use the camera itself.

Having used one machine with a card reader, knowing that it isn't a fair test, I would not want one to be designed into a machine.

These things change far too often and it would become old technology too quickly. Keep things relevant by putting an interchangeable graphics card in the machine or something else that would be far more useful to everyone.

I agree, they change to fast to have it permanently integrated, but would it kill apple (or third party vendor) to replace the expresscard slot thingy with a card reader? that way no more space is consumed, people dont have to buy something from a 3rd party until the next big thing comes along, and apple gets to say that they also support the flavour of the month.

Apple included USB2 and an Express Card slot (on some models) for a reason.

quite frankly, have you seen some of the laptops with 5/1 card readers, they look totally trashy, like a dell or an hp or something, either buy a 5/1 reader for usb2, use your camera, or quitchercryin.

If there was a single dominant card then I wouldn't have a problem with a build in card slot. But since there is so many different kinds, there is no point as I would rather have the sleek looks of the MBP over the extra thickness of the card reader. Where would they put it?

My SD card folds in half and I can just plug in right into the USB port, so that would be useless to me, 'cept maybe it would save me the time of folding it in half!

The part that HP or Dell or any of the others use probably costs less than $5.00 but the engineering costs probably contribute another $25.00 per unit just to carve out space and make connections with the motherboard USB.

In the U.S.A., it seems as though hardware companies go out of their way to make it difficult to provide compatibility with Apple products.

Let me clarify my statement, the expresscard slot has a plastic protective cover (as far as I remember at least), why not replace that protective cover with a complete yet removable removable card reader? The expresscard allows for card pluged in to either access the systems as a PCI express device or a USB device, the reader would simply use the USB method of access, but being removable would still allow the end user to change the format of the card reader slot evice, the slot device would also allow for a continues look for the macbook pro, give us a flexible memory card reader as well as a express card slot.
