POLL: Prefer old or new iMac design?

Apart from the keyboard, I have to agree that the new iMacs look pretty garish. I really was ready to buy until I saw them. That black around the screen really turned me off. I was hoping that they would look like thick Apple Cinema Displays. Now my old one is looking a darn sight better.

agreed. i would have almost voted for the G6 design if it weren't for that horrid keyboard.
I like the new one better... never cared much for the old one, it was too fat and "lumpy" (but I did like the iLamp, though

everything at apple is going with the cold/steel/pro look. i like it.
My God, it's gorgeous. How can you guys hate it? The white iMac is friendlier, yes, but it's also more childlike-- Macbook style. This is the essence of power without feeling overwrought (G5/Mac Pro, ughh). It's almost Zen in its two colors and single, continuous curve. There isn't a single element out of balance.
I also think the black around the screen is one of the most professional and beautiful things they could have done--it instantly sets it apart by giving those cold edges some warmth (oddly, by way of black). To be totally honest, I think it's the most beautiful machine Apple's ever designed. And the back? Wow. Just wow.
I want one SO BAD. When will there be an Apple laptop that looks like this??

The new ones could have rolled off ANYONE'S assembly line, not the great apple designs we're used to.
If the new imac looked like the back of my ipod/iphone, silver with the shiny silver apple, (how nice would that look on the back of the imac?) I would have sold my white 2.16 C2D.
As it stands now I like my imac a LOT better (looks wise) than the new imac.

I really like the aluminium look and the thinness, and I like the black surround to the screen. The thing I think really lets it down is the giant black apple – it seems a bit glaring and clumsy compared to the rest of the design. I'd have been more inclined to go with an inset, slightly different shade of aluminium Apple logo like so:

Having said that, I'll be buying one when Leopard comes out – it's exactly the computer I want, and I'm not going to not buy one because of the colour of the logo.

I like the new look with the aluminum casing and black trim. But I have to admit it looks a little "retro", comparing to the white imac. The white imac is more uniform and minimalist. Despite the toy-like white color, it is more subtle in its own way.
Since all the professional product line uses aluminum casing, shiny metallic logo, and black finish, people at Apple gets us to somehow relate this tone with a product that is more "professional"-- a product that is higher-end.
Who knows this design might grow on us. Even though it seems like they try to do something a little more than necessary, IMO the design is contemporary and should last longer with time. The white imac looks more futuristic, but that doesn't mean a good thing.

I like the updates from a hardware perspective, but would have been just as happy to see them in the old white version. I don't see anything better about the aluminum--the back even looks the same (and still no VESA mount).

what about the G3 iMac
I'm sort of holding out to actually see one. I think the front generally looks fine, but the back, from the photos and graphics, looks very curious to me. It reminds me of the back of a CRT television... but I'm assuming the plastic isn't typical cheap matte finish plastic as used by other vendors, so I'll wait to see it.
Otherwise I think the design that the iMac G5 and prior CD / C2D iMacs had is the nicest one.
P.S. Why on Earth are you calling it the "G6" design? There's nothing G6 about it. It doesn't have a "G6" processor, nor is the processor the sixth generation of anything, as far as I know, and it isn't the sixth generation of the iMac either.

I quite like the new one. Looks like a real attempt, in design terms, to bridge the gap between computers and televisions, which is no bad thing. The old iMac looked a bit toyish (although my white Macbook looks toyish I suppose, but I still love it).
It's alright. I really do not like the black trim. It looks like they just slapped it on there. If it wasn't there, all it'd be is a silver G5/C2D iMac with a slim keyboard.
