Thought it would be interesting to compile our thoughts on when we can expect the more modern form factor with FaceID and minimal bezels to trickle down to non-Pro iPads. I initially thought the Air would get it this year with similar pricing to the Pro 10.5” it was replacing, but I can understand hitting the $500 price point was the better choice and that unfortunately ruled out FaceID. I also feel software holds the Pro’s back so much that a cheaper FaceID iPad would seriously cannibalize Pro sales so they rightly avoided that.

All that said, I have no idea but I’m voting Fall 2020 to coincide with the release of iOS 14. We’ll be with these new iPads for 1.5 years.
 
I’d gusss spring 2020. Though we haven’t had a new ‘ipad’ yet, so we could see it as early as fall 2019.
 
I feel that Apple will want the iPads to have longer lifecycle. So since Apple just updated the lower iPads with A12 this year, and I doubt they would replace the A12 next year since it's a beast of a chip for something that inexpensive (eg. iPad mini 5), I'm guessing FaceID will come on next re-design of the non-pro iPads. Hopefully by then we will have second gen Face ID that require smaller sensors and more accurate.

As they do once in a while, the lower end products get a nice update that brings part of the specs (like the A12 series) in line with all the current high end models. I wonder if this is a sign that they're really going to try to keep all iPads updated (mini and Air getting A13 months after the Pro gets A13 for example). Or since the mini and Air got a significant update, will they let them sit like this for a few years?

Either way, I think it'll take a few years before we see the Pro / FaceID style design come to the mini or Air. I'd love to see that FaceID/Pro design applied to the mini, would love that kind of device to complement my 12.9", but it's probably few years away.
 
Out of all possible outcomes, I’d like to see a full screen Mini the most.

Regarding the new iPads getting A12, I can’t help but wonder if sluggish 2018 iPhone sales played a role in that by supplying extra chips. I hope they don’t let these models go unchanged for 3+ years again...
 
Maybe never for the non pro. They may want to keep it as a pro feature and keep the prices down for the non pro models.
 
I have an XR (with Face ID) and an iPad with Touch ID. Touch ID is still faster to unlock my device than Face ID. So until they improve FaceID, I hope they dont completely remove Touch ID.

I have Xr and 10.5 pro. I totally agree. I can have the iPad unlocked and ready to go while picking it up. Xr though is different story.
 
iPad Pros are the result of two things

1) wanting a second iPad price tier

2) having new iPhone tech available to make pros more desirable

Basic iPads won’t get pro 1 tech until

3) phones exist to steal pro 2 tech from

4) so apple can put it into pro 2 iPads and pro 1 tech is then available to put into non pro pads

I don’t think that has to do with why the A12 is in the new iPads. At some point it becomes more costly to run fabs at low output (older chips) than it does to consolidate your chip production across a larger set of devices.

I’d say just for the sake of keeping the mini (the perfect iPad in my eyes) relevant I hope they don’t just let it sit without an update for another three years. Personally, however, as long as there is an updated iPad mini when I’ll replace the new one I’ll purchase this year...I don’t care given I replace mine in 3-5 years. The A12 is going to hold up phenomenally well, better than any A series before it, for regular usage over an extended time period.

A12 certainly gives the new Mini a great shelf life, but I’m hoping for a new form factor in the next couple of years. Same device size with more screen and less bezels. Even the shrunken bezels of the 10.5” would be an improvement on the Mini, but ultimately no home button and minimal bezels is my ideal. I want that for all non-pro iPads sooner rather than later, but am happy with the current lineup today.

Correct. Given the fact they can take so long just to refresh the mini, it will not be surprised.

I think eventually it will come out to the question of demand. If the demand is good, it will certainly speed up the upgrade or even for us to have iPad mini pro in future.

So please support the new devices by upgrading now. Haha.
 
I think it basically comes down to when the tech is so cheap that they can throw it into any of their devices, even the “cheap” ones. Personally, I would like it to be built in to the MacBook and Pro laptops. They’ve already got room since the FaceTime camera is already there.

That could be the headline feature of the first MacBook powered by an A-series chip.

It's not. The Face ID system is the same one. The speed gain is from the A12 chip. And it's not twice as fast.
