So I know it sounds ridiculous, but I want to start a lengthy discussion on whether Apple leaves holes in their firmware on purpose and maybe even tells the devs about them. More iPhones = more money, right? Maybe a way around the AT&T contractual agreements that they have?

Hmm.. I vote for option 4:

Apple not taking too much interest in securing iPhone firmware 1.x.x, and seeing how securing 2.x.x unfolds... ;)

Apple makes more off carrier royalties right? I can see the argument for increased iTunes music and apps purchase outside AT&T for example, but I doubt its an internally accepted stance, maybe just a few inside programmers...

edit:
Thinking about it for a second more, people want what they can't have. Maybe it is a master plan to ultimately get everyone not on AT&T (or willing to switch) hot and bothered and eventually give them hope.

1. Apple would prefer everyone to be on it's contracts and buy every app from apple.

2. Apple does make money off unlocked iphones, will make money selling apps to these same users, and will sell additional phones that are on contract because people can add 3rd party apps unofficially.

3. Apple is smart enough to know not everyone will be happy with thier iphone the way it came even if they tripled capacity, made 100 new apps, and made it free with contract so they will allow you some control.

4. Apple could make the iphone (nearly) impossible to hack by encrypting everything but can make people happy by opening it a little, yet ultimately securing overall control through updates in firmware.

I think that about covers it =)

i also think that its not that apple as a whole allows this and supports jailbreaking, but a few programmers probably leak info out to select people and then it spreads from there. i dont think apple purposely leaves loopholes, but it happens and the programmers writing the software know about them and some probably talk about this to other programmers. if security was their number one priority they would find a way to lock everyone out, but im sure they have bigger fish to fry.

Mmm...fried fish.
