You pretty much have to order right away or wait a few months, which do you prefer?

Best time to buy a new iPhone is ALWAYS in August. Right before the next model comes out.
Why? You get a brand new iPhone running a final version of iOS. None of this endless iOS updates every few weeks all year long. Baaaa

I voted for pre order but I’m probably not going to get it this year.

I always preorder. I’ve never had issue with my preorder devices. I hate to preorder and it not be delivered until a month later. I only had that problem with the 7+.

Store Reservations are best. Put your reservation 24-48 hours before first day of availability. You don't need to pre-pay or risk your phone with UPS. During the first week of availability, plenty of people are willing to pay $100 for your reservation.

I reckon that unless you must have the latest iPhone on day one, the move is actually to wait a few months before buying. This brings a few benefits. YMMV.

- You avoid the anxiety of making a rushed purchase right after the pre-order goes live.
- You avoid potential buyer's remorse because you chose the wrong model, storage option or colour.
- You allow yourself time to see and handle the phones in store before deciding, especially when new materials and colours are introduced.
- You avoid potential issues with new hardware. Every year seems to bring a new "...gate" however minor. Apple have also been working with new factories and suppliers recently.
- Allow iOS updates more time to iron out any early issues.
- If you wait until March, Apple could potentially release a new colour that you happen to love.
- Potential discounts from third parties depending on how long you wait.
- You allow case makers more time to finalise their designs unless you always buy Apple cases.
