Poor Battery Life - Hardware issue?

Hi all,

Up until a month ago or so, I could make do with one full charge every night on my iPhone 7. Battery health is currently at 86% and I’ve had the phone since April 2018.

I’m now having to charge it multiple times a day. I’ve also noticed, when I plug the charger in, the phone sometimes alternates between charging and not charging. Wiggling the cable sometimes helps, sometimes not. I’ve inspected the contacts and there are some black pins so I will be buying a new cable.

I wanted to ask the following:

- Can damaged hardware (cable, lightning port) reduce the actual charge being transferred to the phone’s battery?

- What’s the likelihood the lightning port inside the phone is damaged? Is it a common issue?

My iPad Pro does the same thing with an indication that it’s not charging sometimes while being plugged in. I just disconnect and reconnect the cable and that fixes it. Not sure if it’s an actual problem though, as it will mostly occur when I’m outside and have he screen at maximum brightness while using it for work.

I think the key issue in my case is that this occurs when I use my 6-ft. Lightning cable, which is not an Apple-branded cable. When using the 3-ft. Apple charging cable that issue doesn’t occur, so I think it could definitely be a cable or charger issue in your case.

With the battery drain, have you recently installed any new apps? Check to see which apps have background refresh enabled.

Get a fresh battery. You’ll see a massive boost in battery life.

The blackened pin is normal on aging cables. You'll want to replace that along with the battery. Anything below 90% is questionable.

Yes definitely. Corroded or dirty contact points will reduce or even prevent charging.

It's a common issue. It can also be replaced either you or a tech.

Will be replacing my cable and see how that goes.

As for battery replacement, is it only Apple themselves who will supply a genuine battery? Or can I buy one online? I’d imagine online batteries will not be genuine.
