Poor Sound Quality in XP Pro via Boot Camp

So I got around to installing XP Pro because someone sent me a 3-Day trial for TF2, and the game itself runs great, however, whenever audio is played through my iMac's built-in speakers, it sounds horrible. As if it's played through a tin can. Now I know the iMac's speakers aren't all that great, but they shouldn't sound this horrible.

Any thoughts on the subject? It's a new 24" 3.06Ghz iMac with 2GB of RAM.

Also, any idea why Windows is so LOUD? Going up one notch by hitting the volume up on my keyboard takes it from quiet to ear-blasting.

I encountered this bug as well. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a fix for it, but there is a workaround - using headphones or external speakers. At last for me, the sound was only bad coming through the iMac's internal speakers.

thats a wierd bug youve got there.

try turning the system volume right down and then game volume up, or vice versa.

Does your sound also crackle or seem to have a trailing end "wooshing" sound after each file played? I read somewhere that downloading the latest HD Codecs from Realtek resolved this issue. The newest release from realtek being 2.02.

I have the same issue and am downloading the codecs now. I can post in a bit to let you know if it worked.

Could you link me to the driver you used? I installed what I thought was the latest version but it didn't seem to do anything.

Also, should I uninstall the old driver first or just install over the old one?

No need to uninstall anything, just run the installer as it comes down from Realtek.

R2.02 for XP is what you want if you're running an iMac. I think on the Macbooks it's a different sound vendor all together.

If you want to make Windows less loud and make each notch change it less, double-click on the volume icon in the bottom right and put down the slider for "Wave."

Using some external speakers or headphones will likely fix this issue.

Make sure you've installed the drivers from the Leopard install disc (#2 IIRC).

Updating the drivers could also help.

When I originally installed the drivers from the Restore Disc it sounded crummy, and even when I updated the drivers it sounds crummy.

So it seems I'm doomed to have crummy audio in Windows.
