I bought an iPhone online and I'm not totally happy with the fit and finish.

The black plastic sticks out a noticable amount from the chrome, on the top but not the sides or bottom. It's small, but not what I would expect from a $700 phone. I called the nearest Apple store and the person I talked to gave me a "we probably aren't going to exchange it" response.

Anyone notice the same thing on their phone? Do you think I can get an exchange? I'm not keen on driving an hour and paying for parking only to be told that the defect is too small (it's misaligned by about the width of a screen protector). It definately is small thing, but I expected a perfect phone and I do want an exchange.

Geniuses are generally very lenient. As long as the phone is still under warranty they usually exchange them for refurbished units (check out threads by 'some' people).

However if the problem is REALLY REALLY small then just put on a case and forget about it. My 3GS's sleep/wake button is slanted downwards but it still works and I don't find it a problem, so I didn't swap it. Just exchange it if it bugs you ;)

Go to the Store and demand an exchange. Since your iPhone came with poor build quality, they'll exchange it for you.

As the Apple Genius who dealt with me said, "You've paid a lot of money for this device, so you're well within your rights to make sure it's perfect".

If it's not built to the standards it should be, then by all means return it.

You may feel petty at the time, but when you leave with the iPhone you want, you'll know it was worth it.

The iPhone, and indeed Apple's Genius staff, are all too often placed on this pedestal. At the end of the day it's only a phone and the Apple Geniuses are only sales staff. If a product does not meet the build quality or standards set, then you have consumer rights on your side to demand a replacement.
