Hi

My M1 MBP arrived last week. When I play music on the internal speakers only, there are a lot of pops.. I can reproduce this by doing a build in Xcode without issue.

However, if I reboot the MBP, it goes away.. For a while. I haven't figured out what causes it to come back. The issue has also gone away by itself.. What I did to have it disappear is beyond me.

I called Apple and I have an appointment. However, I can't reproduce the bug anymore.. So going in is going to be a waste of time.

Is this software or hardware ?

Anyone else with this issue ?

Thanks

J

I've had the exact same issue for months and months now. Interestingly, I occasionally get little bits of crackling even when the simulator isn't running - just when I have a lot of processes like playing a youtube video along with having other tabs and apps open - so it seems to be something that happens with lots of processing going in general. And the crackling continues if I plug in my headphones, meaning it's not a speaker issue it's something deeper (as the terminal bandaid / temporary fixes other people have posted imply).

When I first got it, I started to install all my apps, Xcode etc and I suspect Alred and Spotlight were indexing and the pops and cracks where so bad I stopped the music..

But now, if it's going to do it, it always does it during a build from Xcode..

What is this "terminal bandaid" you speak of ?

Thanks

J

It has happened to me occasionally too. Usually Chrome causes it for me, but there's no set steps to make it happen.

I am in my 14 day return period. I figure if I wait past that date, I will be playing whack-a-mole with Apple support after. I asked for an exchange.

I also asked that they send me a new one before I return the old. Apparently this requires supervisor approval.. I am waiting on that..

Supervisor approval along with a credit card hold to secure the product in case it's not sent back. Also have you tried a couple of troubleshooting things? You mentioned the popping is in the external speakers. Have you tried plugging headphones into the port to see if you hear the popping? One more option is have you tried erasing the drive and reinstalling Big Sur. It could just be a corrupt file and not necessarily a hardware issue, especially since you mentioned that it temporarily disappears with a restart. Often if it's a corrupt file from other softwares you have installed a restart clears that software out of the cache which may be why the popping goes away. The moment you launch that software again the corrupt file will activate and cause the issue.

Hi

It only pops on the internal speakers.. No such issue with any headphones that I own..

I haven't tried re-installing.. I might give that a try.

Thanks for the reply.

Then you need to fix your original post because that's not what you stated. Check your first post: "My M1 MBP arrived last week. When I play music on the external speakers, there are a lot of pops.. I can reproduce this by doing a build in Xcode without issue."

You are correct. Thanks for pointing that out. I have made the change.

Return it. A hardware issue will never go away unless fixed or replaced.

I am waiting for an email or call from Apple indicating they will ship the new one without me first returning the old one.. But ya, I figure I better get this sorted before my 14 days are up.. Then it will be a lot harder to get this fixed.

Hello, I have been having sound issues on the new MBA 2020. I am having issues with spoken content which is part of the accessibility feature. It sounds static-like while reading aloud documents and web pages. I got a replacement computer and it did not solve the problem. The new one still crackles/sounds like static periodically.

Like someone mentioned, I think the issue is much deeper than a simple exchange or trouble shooting via phone call. While combing google some ppl report issues after installing Big Sur on older laptops. I’m still wondering if it’s an M1 issue and if anyone at Apple even knows how to fix it yet.

I’m disappointed in Apple. Spoken content works much better on my iPhone my new $1k computer should be the same or better.

Hi

Just out of curiosity, does it pop for all types of audio content or just spoken word content ? Does this happen on internal speakers or ear buds and headphones as well ?

The static/crackles is with spoken content feature with and without headphones. Playing music and videos is fine. Any ideas?

Try changing the sample rate in Audio Midi Setup. i can’t remember if it’s meant to be 44.1khz or 44khz, but if it doesn’t match the hardware you’ll get clicks/pops. That fixed a 16-inch MacBook Pro for me.
