Hi everyone:
In august I bought a macbook pro 16 inch (basic 16 inch model) in space grey from the refurbished store so I could use it for my univeristy classes. I also bought a benq EW2780U(27 inch mac friendly monitor that also charged the laptop) along with an apple thunderbolt 3 cable, an apple keyboard, an apple usb-usb c converter, and a third party usb b to usb c converter for my backup disk. About a week into using my new computer I noticed that the usb-c ports on the left hand side would not recognize that something was plugged into them; the thunderbolt 3 failed, the usb b to usb c failed, and my usb to usb c converter failed. I tried resettting the SMC and NVRAM/PRAM twice, which temporarily fixed the problem, but it always came back. I took my laptop into apple for a repair, and after I got it back the problem was gone for about 3 weeks during which time I continued using my monitor along with my backup disk on the left side like I normally would, but after 3 weeks the ports failed again, only this time intermittently. I eventually got Apple to take the laptop back and ordered a new one from the apple for education store.
Last week I got my new macbook pro; it has the same specs as my refurbished machine. I read that the 16 inch macs like to be charged on the right side instead of the left, so I moved my setup so my mac could hook up to my monitor, charge, and backup on the right side. This setup worked until yesterday when my right side ports began to fail intermittently(same problem as last time, no wires would work with it). I contacted apple support today and am returning the new laptop and getting another one. However, I know people here know a lot more about macs than I do, so i'm writting this to ask if anyone else has had issues with port failures on their 2019 macbook pro 16 inch when a benq EW2780U monitor is connected to their laptop, or if anyone has any advice for me so that I can keep my ports working.
Thank you.
