Hi,

I would like to purchase a 160GB+ (ideally 250GB) external (small) hard disk which has USB2 and Firewire. Will a SR MBP power the drive through a firewire port? A lot of the devices mention USB power only.

Any specific models to recomend?

Thanks,

Neil

Yes, you can use bus powered drives - USB or Firewire.

There many to choose from. LaCie and Maxtor I like and have experience with.

USB drives aren't bootable though, right? So if you want to make a bootable clone you'll want something with FW 400 at least.

I think that's only true for PPC machine. Intel Macs can boot from USB.

The migration assistant during an install though only offers firewire as an option (if that matters).
