I've been wanting to get into iPhone development for a while new (I'm a senior Computer Science student) but I don't have and can't afford an intel Mac. (I'm stuck on an old PowerBook G4.) However, I've come up with a potential idea that would allow me to try it out over the summer.

The school has intel Macs available in a lab, but they don't have dev tools installed. I was wondering if it's possible to download and install the SDK to a small portable hard drive and keep all the needed files on there. Then I could just take the drive with me and use the Macs there. It limits when I could do development work, but it would allow me to try it without having to buy another Mac.

Anybody know if this would be possible? I don't know how the SDK installs itself (if it does at all).

I haven't done this but it would probably work. You can install the sdk wherever you like on a desktop machine so having it on a removable should also work.

The questions that I can think of are:

What about stuff installed in the system? There may not be anything critical to iPhone development that's located there but I'm not sure.

Do you have admin priviledges on the shared machine? May not need it, not really sure.

Developer certificates. These are installed into the system keychain. You don't want to leave them on the machine when you're not there. If you're only doing Sim development you probably won't need them.

Running the Simulator leaves a bunch of files in ~/Library which you should probably delete when you're done.

There are also minor issues with Xcode prefs, prefs stored in the project by user id, and maybe other files that Xcode will scatter around.

i wonder what keeps happening to my posts, plz tell me noones deleting them.

yeh sounds promising, and i think well just leave everything simulated as late as possible, then just use my machine when weve gone as far as we can.
