Hi, I just bought Orange Box but Portal doesn't work it gets to the loading screen then crashes i really want to play but it wont let me. Can anyone help me.
EDIT: I just tried Team Fortress 2 it gets to the menu but when i click on one of the menus it crashes.

Well I'm running bootcamp 1.3 if that makes a difference also how do you update bootcamp.

Bootcamp is up to 1.4 now, which definitely should give you a performance boost. I forget exactly how I upgraded mine from 1.3 to 1.4 but the instructions will probably come with the download. :)

I'm didn't think the MB could handle Portal, given the lack of a graphics card. Color me surprised.:D

Uh... You know that enhances to the Source engine in recent years have only been cosmetic? In that if you run Half Life 2 with its options maxed out, then play Episode 2 with the same options it will run more or less the same?

To the OP, I suggest updating everything. Also give the Omega Drivers a try, I'm using them with my video card o/c and everything runs fine on my iMac.

it's probably the GMA 950 at fault i'm afraid. It is not officially supported and given Valves recent bad mouthing of the chipset in it's stance on not porting to mac, I'd say the chances of a quick fix are slim.

:(

I dunno about that. With everything maxed, 6xAA, 6xAF I get a steady 60fps in HL2 but in Ep2 with those settings it runs well under 30. The new lighting etc. really chugs on the performance. On a side note, with my 2.2ghz MBP Ep2 runs better with 2xAA than without it, kinda odd...

The omega driver wont work because I don't have a ATI or Nvidia card.

I ran and finished Portal on my Alum iMac 24", 2.4. I'm running it in bootcamp with XP. I don't remember running into any issues with Portal...other than some levels giving me headaches :). Very fun game.

Actually I was able to run all of the Half-Life games included in the Orange Box. The original Half-Life 2 ran great with no issues. The other two sequal games ran, but I had many graphic issues that would either crash windows altogether, or I loss certain texture graphics in the game. In both cases, a restart would clear up the issue and I could continue playing.

It wouldn't load for me, until I made a shortcut and appended +mat_forcehardwaresync 0 +snd_async_prefetch_priority 1 to the properties. Now it freezes whenever I view a portal. I'm also on a Macbook.

Having pretty much the same problems as everyone else here on my black Macbook Core Duo with 2GB RAM. Portal does load but crashes. Also Team Fortress 2 crashes, sometimes when I click on a menu, and sometimes it goes as far as finding and connecting to a server before it gives me a BSOD. I can get Half Life 2 working but it crashes each time it loads a new area. I remember reading a solution to this a while ago, but can't seem to find it now. So overall, not very positive results from the Orange Box games on a GMA 950.

Hopefully there will be some clever people somewhere who can find some workarounds, but for now, I am a bit stuck.

I was actually having similar problems running it on my MBP, but I ended up just reinstalling the Boot Camp drivers (not even updated ones, the same disc I used to originally install them, probably 1.2 or 1.3) and everything worked great.

Are you using any virtualization software to boot into Windows when not using Boot Camp? I only ask because I have a feeling Fusion did something to my Boot Camp drivers, because when I first installed Windows and installed the drivers, everything was fine, then after using Fusion to run Windows and then later using Boot Camp, I ran into the driver problem. Anyone had any similar problems?

Curious. I'm running it on a MacBook (C2D 2.16Ghz 2GB RAM) with the launch options "+mat_forcehardwaresync 0 +snd_async_prefetch_priority 1 -console -heapsize 256000 -dxlevel 80 -width 1280 -height 800 -novid +cl_drawmonitors 0 +r_shadowrendertotexture 0" (I took your settings and added them to the settings suggested here for CS:S, except updated to use DX8), and it crashes for me when I walk through a portal.

I'm using Boot Camp 1.3, and been using my boot camp parition using with Parallels sometimes.

I know that this isn't an error with the Macbook hardware since I just came off of running Vista on my Macbook and Portal worked fine and Team Fortress 2 worked (but incredibly low FPS). To fix the FPS, lots of people suggested going back to XP, but now I'm getting the same issues as you guys.

So, just to clearify, Macbook's horrible video card (for once) isn't to blame for this issue.

I have the same problem. I'm using the settings:

+mat_forcehardwaresync 0 +snd_async_prefetch_priority 1 -console -heapsize 256000 -dxlevel 80 -width 800 -height 600 -novid +cl_drawmonitors 0 +r_shadowrendertotexture 0 -window -dxlevel 80

Portal crashes once I go through the first portal. The game runs fine when I'm in the cell. TF2 has the same problem as well.

Same issue here... but CrossOver works.

I have a 2.16 GHz Macbook w/ 2 GB RAM and have the same issue, however I have gotten Portal to work by using CrossOver 6.2.

At the end of the Steam install process it gave me an error saying essentially that my system resources did not meet the requirements, blah blah, but using CrossOver's force install completion option, launching Steam after that worked fine.

In-game it gets a little tricky, because except for the main menu, the menu system doesn't display correctly -- The text on the rest of the menus just doesn't display, and the same goes for the console. However, I can still enter commands into the console successfully.

The video in fullscreen mode is also displayed off-center, but running it in windowed mode worked fine. Portals onscreen cause significant performance slowdown but otherwise it's fine.

Despite the menu problem, I've been able to save and load by choosing and remembering a specific save game slot.

I've been running Portal with simple launch options: -windows -console
