I left the settings at default (but I put it at native res). I am getting 20FPS and less when near portals. Whats the deal? This game is 3 years old...running in OSX steam btw.

I don't mean any disrespect but once you change anything in settings it's no longer at the default. The resolution change will make a big difference in game play.

no offense taken, but who would play a game in a non native res? its auto settings don't factor in resolution when looking at the computers performance (At least in my experience) this performance is a joke right? I don't get if this is steams fault or the $2500 laptop is not powerful enough to run source based games on optimal settings?

Did you buy the high resolution screen? That could be the culprit.
I have the i7 with standard resolution and when I put the game at native resolution (1440x900 for me) and bump everything else up it runs fine, although Im not sure how to check FPS in this game, what is the input?

I agree, the auto settings should factor in the rez.

A couple of things.

If you switch to Windows, you'll see a HUGE boost in performance. OG-L performance under OS X is still much slower than the other side.

Another thing, Apple's choice of GPUs are for power conversation vs performance. The 330m sits somewhere between a 9600m GT and a 9600 GT. It's a really low-end GPU by today's standards and even when compared to 3 years ago its performance is about lower-mid-range.

So when you couple the GPU's performance with OS X's hit on OG-L performance, you'll need to lower the rez to get things running happy.
