Hello, I have always wanted to play the game mugen on a mac.

A linux version of this game has recently been released, and I was wondering if it is possible to port the linux version to the mac. I am a noob ranked programmer, but was wondering if it is possible to do this through terminal some how.

Edit: The binary file used to run this is a unix binary, so I was hoping it would be possible to run it somehow.

-Thanks

No it is a Linux binary. Two different things. In fact there is no such thing as a Unix binary either. Mac OS X can't run OpenBSD binaries out of the box for instance, nor can it run Solaris binaries.

If you don't have the source code then no.

If you don't know how to program then no.

If you want to learn to program then sure, with some time and patience you might be able to port it. But don't expect to be able to do it in a week. It'll probably take 6 months to a year if you have to learn how to program as well.

Well, to start off, Zajasa, you need to know the truth. M.U.G.E.N. has been out of production for years. It was only released in a temporary beta and they (Elecbyte) closed shortly after releasing a windows version. Despite being dead, there is a massive modding community out there as the engine is fairly popular. Many people have released their own ports of Arcade characters, stages, and skins (called screenpacks) to emulate their favorite games.

Now, onto compatibility:

No, I don't believe that the linux version works on any mac (especially not a PPC-based as it is a i386 binary). However, I have tested the Windows version in Wine (a runtime that emulates windows apps inside of Unix-based computers; including macs) and I can safely say that it runs nearly flawlessly on my new Macbook. I suggest you find a tutorial online to install wine and download the hi-res version of Win-Mugen. Since I'm a terminal geek, it's hard to translate to someone who doesn't know what their doing. But, yes; I can confirm that Mugen can, in theory, run on an intel mac.
