Had a quick play with Portrait Mode on my 8 plus, and while it's pretty good, it does have its limitations.

It quite noticeably removes a lot of fine detail from around your subject when applying its mask to blur the background. In the following images, you can see how the fine hair detail of the dog is lost in the Portrait Mode image. The same thing will happen to images of your friends and family, especially if they have wispy hair or fine details to their clothing.

Probably not even noticeable to the 99%, who are just gonna be enthralled by playing with the various lighting features and the added background blur they can get from their phones.

The original, with all the fine detail to Woodie's fur.
