I’ll be honest, I’ve never used these but wanted to try the new camera on the Pro Max. When I select these modes and take a picture with something in the circle, like a figurine of an alien, I just get a standard color photo.

Am I doing something wrong here because it’s happening on my X as well with iOS 13.

For me it either says move close, move farer away or place object in circle, but it nether recognizes the object.

Update:
On my XS Max it's kind of working. At least sometimes the circle turns yellow and the object is recognized, if i move a few cm I'm back to the place object message again.

I'll never understand why they changed it in ios 12.whateveritwas. Had to download a 3rd party app, Halide, to get a functioning portrait mode that doesn't require a person to be in the picture. (I take pics of my puppies and objects, not people).

On XR, iOS 13 didn't fix it either.

3.1 doesn’t change things for the XR either. I just use Halide if I want a non-human portrait pic.
