Possible Bug Found Need Your Help....

... trying to comfirm it. I think Safari is locking my Mac.

Try this and let me know if it locks you Mac.

Steps to recreate the bug:

1. Launch Safari(latest build) and then minimize it.
2. Launch iPhoto(2.0) and pick picture that you have and start adjust the contrast on the picture back and forth.

At this point my Mac locks and everything is frozen stiff.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT HAPPENS FOR YOU!

try the usual X fixes:

repair permissions
reboot
verify boot disk

if tyhat dont work try uninstalling the offending app(s) and re-installing them.

for the two you mentioned it is a simple drag drop to the trash can, empty it.
Then run software update and it will install safari and iphoto2 for you.

i wouldn't recommend that...

software only updates when it finds the outdated version numbers. you will have to download them manually from apple.

but really...if they are conflicting, which i highly doubt, then it won't be with the actual app itself, but the system files the apps put in place, which will be a lot harder for someone to find.

and also of note, what size file are the images you are trying to mess around with? iphoto is NOT known for it's speed, and large files make iphoto slow down tremendously. and what machine are you running on (with system specs)?

The photos that I am messing with are about a 468K. The reason I think it is Safari is that the only times I have lockups Safari is always open. If I close Safari and use iPhoto everything works great. I have tried lots of ways to recreate the lockup. I have launched iTunes (playing a song), Mail,iChat,Word, and a Java IDE(Eclipse) then launch iPhoto and mess with the picture(different one each time) and nothing happens iPhoto works great. Now, while leave all those apps open I launch Safari and then try to change the contrast on the photo with iPhoto...whammo... the system locks.

I mean I am a Software Engineer and I agree that Safari shouldn't cause this problem cause each app get's it's own memory playground and resources but something is causing it. My theory (from 30,000 feet up in end user space) is Apple has integrated "WebCore" api into OS X and maybe iPhoto using some image rendering libs from the "WebCore" and when Safari is running and iPhoto is running they must share some resource that causes the UI to hang.

I will keep hunting for the problem. Thanks for your help.

PowerMac G4 Single 1.2ghz (upgrade from 800).
768MB of CL2 Crucial Ram
120GB WD JB 8MB Cache HD
40GB(OEM) Seagate
64MB ATI 8500 Video Card
Airport Card
CD-RW ROM Drive

since you are a software engineer maybe you want to check out the crash logs...

home directory/library/logs/crashreporter/safari.crash.log (all crash logs will be with this one)
